More Than 31,000 Fans Are Staring at Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Countdown Clock Right Now

Marvel has a long history of turning simple stunts into internet events, but few have been as strange as a ticking clock. Back in March 2025, the studio announced the cast of ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ by slowly panning down a row of director’s chairs in a livestream that ran for hours. That broadcast drew about 100,000 concurrent viewers on YouTube, and Disney said it generated 275 million digital views across platforms.

When the studio wanted a follow-up, it went even simpler. After a month of weekly teasers that played in theaters ahead of ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’, Marvel launched a permanent livestream on its YouTube channel on January 13, shortly after the fourth teaser went online. It was titled ‘DOOMSDAY CLOCK’ and featured the Avengers logo, the phrase ‘Doomsday Is Coming’ and a countdown to the film’s release.

At first, the stream looked like a joke. The countdown began at more than 11 months, and fans in the chat wondered whether Marvel would really leave it running until the film opens on December 18. Nearly 10 months later, the answer is yes, and the audience has only grown: the stream now has more than 31,000 people watching at the same time, with over 1.1 million likes on the channel’s 23.9 million subscribers.

On the surface, there’s nothing to see. The timer ticks down through months, days, hours, minutes and seconds in front of a moody green background. At the moment the clock shows about 1 month and 17 days left, and viewers are essentially watching a very long countdown to a movie.

But fans have learned that Marvel sometimes uses the stream to signal something. The countdown’s background was eventually swapped to put Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom front and center, a change that sent fans scrambling for clues. In another instance, the numbers changed color minutes before the studio released an official trailer, which convinced viewers that visual changes on the stream are worth watching.

The clock has also become a rumor engine. Not long ago, scoopers noticed that the display seemed to glitch roughly every 10 seconds, right after MLB and Marvel announced a special look at the film during Game 1 of the World Series. Many assumed it was a hint of another reveal, and a new promo did arrive during that broadcast.

There’s a bigger theory underneath all of this. It has been widely reported that the film’s story could include an in-universe countdown to a final Incursion, which would give the real-world clock extra meaning. Whether the stream actually ties into the plot or simply serves as a marketing gimmick, it has successfully trained an audience to keep a browser tab open for months.

The clock fits neatly into the wider strategy. The 4 teasers that preceded it, which began with Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers on December 23 and ended with Letitia Wright’s Shuri, Winston Duke’s M’Baku, Tenoch Huerta’s Namor and Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s Thing on January 13, pulled in more than 1 billion combined views, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Russo brothers also posted a cryptic message saying the rollout was not about teasers or trailers.

Since then, Marvel has kept the conversation going with posters, cast promos, food tie-ins and premium-format ticket pushes. Each of those moments gives the countdown another reason to matter, and the clock itself sits at the center, a simple reminder of how little time remains.

The scale of the audience is notable. Earlier this month, reports put the stream’s viewership at more than 21,000 people at one point, so the jump to the current level shows how quickly attention builds as the release gets closer. With roughly 7 weeks left, the number is likely to climb further.

The film arrives in theaters on December 18, opening against ‘Dune: Part Three’ in a head-to-head clash fans have nicknamed ‘Dunesday’. It’s also the first of 2 Avengers movies, with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ following on December 17, 2027. That means the clock may only be the first of many.

For now, thousands of viewers are doing nothing more than watching numbers fall. But in a franchise that has made waiting part of the fun, that may be the point. Every second that disappears brings ‘Doomsday’ closer, and Marvel seems to understand that the anticipation itself can be the show.

What do you think Marvel is planning for the Avengers: Doomsday countdown clock?
