‘The Odyssey’ Docks at the Domestic Box Office With an Epic Finish Just Behind ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

Every great voyage eventually reaches shore, and Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ has now completed its run at the North American box office. The Homer adaptation opened in mid-July as one of the summer’s biggest event releases, then spent months defying the usual rules of blockbuster decline. Now the final numbers are in, and they tell a story of near-record dominance.

After 105 days in theaters, the film ended its US run with $625.6 million. In its final days, it was playing in just 144 theaters and earning about $34,000 on its 15th Thursday. For a nearly 3-hour R-rated epic about an ancient poem, that kind of staying power was far from guaranteed.

That total lands ‘The Odyssey’ in some elite company. It finishes as the 2nd highest-grossing R-rated film of all time domestically, only about $11 million short of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and its $636.7 million run. It’s also the 2nd highest-grossing film of the year at home, behind ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, and Universal’s 2nd biggest domestic release ever, behind ‘Jurassic World’ at $653.4 million.

Domestically, the film just missed the R-rated crown. Worldwide, though, it took it. The Nolan epic passed ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ in August, and it has since climbed to roughly $1.79 billion globally, with about $1.17 billion coming from international markets. That makes it the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.

It also rewrote the studio record book. ‘The Odyssey’ passed ‘Jurassic World’ to become Universal’s highest-grossing film worldwide, and it became the biggest movie of Nolan’s career. Its opening weekend alone brought in $264.1 million globally, including $124.5 million in North America, and it crossed $1 billion in just 3 weeks, before it even opened in China.

What set this run apart was how slowly it faded. The film’s second-weekend drop was only about 30 percent, and it went on to earn roughly 5 times its opening weekend domestically, a multiplier that most big openers can’t touch. It reached $500 million in the US in just 31 days, one of the fastest paces ever recorded.

Premium screens played a huge role. Large-format theaters accounted for 53 percent of the domestic opening, and IMAX has called the film its highest-grossing release of all time, passing ‘Avatar’. ‘The Odyssey’ was also the first feature shot entirely with IMAX cameras, which helped turn IMAX 70mm showings into a hot ticket that kept selling out for weeks.

Raw totals tell only part of the story. Some analysts have noted that inflation and premium ticket prices make direct comparisons with older hits less straightforward, and Universal’s own domestic record holder, ‘Jurassic World’, still sits ahead on the all-time chart. Even so, the film cost a reported $250 million to make, and estimates put its break-even point at somewhere between $625 million and $750 million. With a worldwide gross near $1.8 billion, it has cleared that bar by a wide margin.

It also helped drive a banner year for Hollywood. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ topped the 2026 chart and became the highest-grossing film of all time at the domestic box office, while Nolan’s epic gave the summer a second major event. Together, they pushed theaters toward their best year since the pandemic.

The film’s theatrical story isn’t entirely over. Universal brought ‘The Odyssey’ back to select IMAX and 70mm screens in October, and the film arrives on digital, 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray on November 18. At the same time, the studio is gearing up for an awards campaign, with screenings and Q&As planned for November.

For Nolan, the numbers cap a remarkable stretch after ‘Oppenheimer’, which earned roughly $975 million worldwide and won the Oscar for Best Picture. ‘The Odyssey’ has now surpassed that total by a wide margin. With the box office chapter closed, the next question is whether the film can turn commercial triumph into awards-season glory.

What do you think was the biggest achievement of The Odyssey?
