A new adaptation of the cult classic vampire film Near Dark is reportedly in development at A24. This rumor comes from film insider Jeff Sneider, who shared the news via his newsletter.

Near Dark is a 1987 neo-Western horror film directed by Kathryn Bigelow in her solo directorial debut. The movie stars Adrian Pasdar, Jenny Wright, Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen, and Jenette Goldstein. The story follows a young man from a small Oklahoma town who gets caught up with a group of nomadic American vampires.

Although the film struggled at the box office, it received positive reviews from critics and has since developed a strong cult following. Fans appreciate its unique blend of horror, Western elements, and gritty storytelling.

Back in October 2006, a remake of Near Dark was announced as a collaboration between Rogue Pictures and Platinum Dunes, with Samuel Bayer set to direct. However, in 2008, the project was put on hold. Producer Bradley Fuller explained that the concept was too similar to Twilight (2008), which also featured a romance between a human and a vampire.

While details about the A24 series are still under wraps and we quite frankly don’t know if this is true, fans are hopeful that the studio’s reputation for bold and atmospheric storytelling will honor the original film’s dark, eerie tone. A24 is known for producing unique and thought-provoking horror, so this new series could be a fitting revival of the story.

It’s still unclear whether the series will be a direct adaptation of the original film or a reimagined take on the vampire tale. Given A24’s track record, it’s likely that the series will focus on a darker, more introspective approach while maintaining the gritty, neo-Western atmosphere of the 1987 film.
