Netflix is rolling out a new change that is already confusing a lot of users. According to reports from Ars Technica, Cord Cutters News, and user posts on Reddit, the platform is now pushing a system where every Netflix profile may need its own email address in order to function properly.

The change is part of a broader update that started rolling out on June 15, according to a Netflix spokesperson quoted by Ars Technica. Some users first noticed it in a stressful way when they tried to log in and suddenly found their profiles locked behind a prompt asking them to “add an email address to your profile” to continue watching.

One user described a situation where their father was trying to watch a live MMA event on Netflix but got locked out right before the broadcast began. The father had previously been using a shared account with his own profile under the household subscription. However, on that day, he was logged out and could not access the account anymore.

After some confusion and troubleshooting, the issue turned out to be the new requirement. The father had to create his own login linked to a unique email address to keep using the profile. The user managed to fix it in time, but described the process as rushed and frustrating, especially during a live event.

This experience is not isolated. More users have been reporting similar situations as Netflix continues to expand this system. Some users say they were not forced to enter an email immediately, but were still prompted to do so when adjusting profile settings. In some cases, Netflix also asked for basic information such as first and last name during setup.

A Netflix spokesperson confirmed to Ars Technica that the update is not temporary. “This sign-in update is a permanent change that started rolling out on June 15, 2026,” the spokesperson said.

Netflix says the goal of the change is to make profiles more independent. Each user would have their own login credentials, which could make it easier to manage settings, use different devices, and enable security features like two-factor authentication. According to Cord Cutters News, it also allows users to set personal preferences such as language, audio settings, and display options without affecting the main account holder.

However, the change does not apply to children’s profiles, which will remain under the existing system without requiring separate email addresses.

Even with these explanations, the reaction from users has been mixed. Some people are unhappy about the added steps, especially families who share one account and regularly switch between profiles on the same TV or device. For them, the update feels like an unnecessary complication for something that used to be simple.

Other users are more concerned about privacy. Some online discussions suggest that Netflix may be collecting more personal data, including email addresses, which could be used for marketing or advertising purposes. Netflix’s privacy policy does state that email information may be shared with marketing partners, which has added to those concerns.

There are also users who say the change affects how they organize their viewing habits. One Reddit user explained that they used multiple profiles on a single account not for different people, but to sort content by mood and category. They wrote that having separate profiles helped them easily switch between movies, documentaries, and rewatch shows without mixing everything together. With the new email requirement, that system becomes harder to maintain.

Overall, the update is slowly changing how Netflix accounts work. While the company frames it as a step toward better personalization and security, many users see it as a more complicated and less flexible system than before.
