Scar Makes His Debut as an Animatronic in New ‘Lion King’ Ride Coming to Disneyland Paris

Disneyland Paris has been steadily transforming its second gate over the past several years, rebranding the former Walt Disney Studios Park into Disney Adventure World and rolling out major new lands like Avengers Campus, Worlds of Pixar, and World of Frozen. That expansion has continued at a rapid pace, with Disney using this year’s D23 event to reveal the next major addition heading to the resort as part of its ongoing overhaul of the park.

That project, a full attraction dedicated to ‘The Lion King,’ was first teased back at D23 2024, when Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro confirmed a new area themed around Simba’s story would eventually join the park. Early concept art showed a log flume ride resembling the same format used for Splash Mountain and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, though many key details remained unconfirmed for months afterward as the project moved through its early development stages.

This weekend’s D23 panel finally filled in those gaps. Disney confirmed the flume ride will offer a full retelling of Simba’s journey from cub to king, featuring scenes and music pulled directly from the original film, and revealed that Scar will make his debut as a brand-new audio-animatronics figure specifically for the attraction’s climactic showdown with Simba.

According to concept art shown during the panel, that confrontation scene marks one of the ride’s most dramatic moments, giving guests a front-row seat to the story’s pivotal turning point. The flume itself features a 52-foot drop, while the ride building housing Pride Rock towers 120 feet into the air, making it one of the tallest architectural centerpieces in any Disney park.

Disney has confirmed the attraction won’t stand alone as a single ride, but will instead anchor a broader immersive area dedicated entirely to ‘The Lion King’ universe. That expanded land will include themed dining, shopping, and character meet-and-greets, giving guests multiple ways to engage with the story beyond the flume ride itself once the full area is complete.

Construction is already underway on the project, according to LaughingPlace’s report from the D23 panel, with Imagineers working alongside teams from Disneyland Paris and Disney Animation Studios to bring the world to life. A Walt Disney Imagineering representative told LaughingPlace the project reflects a story that has captivated audiences for more than 30 years, calling the collaborative effort between the various teams essential to doing the film’s legacy justice.

Unlike Disney’s warm-weather flume rides in California and Florida, the Lion King attraction has been specifically engineered to handle Disneyland Paris’s colder winter conditions. Only one of the ride’s drops takes place outdoors, a deliberate design choice meant to keep the bulk of the experience protected from the elements year-round, ensuring the ride stays fully operational regardless of the season.

Early development materials have also shown maquettes, small-scale sculptures typically used to design full-size animatronics, for characters including Simba, Nala, Timon, Pumbaa, Rafiki, and the hyenas, suggesting the ride will feature a robust cast of animatronic figures well beyond just Scar.

With construction progressing and fresh details now confirmed, Disney’s ‘Lion King’ attraction looks set to become one of Disney Adventure World’s signature experiences once it opens, joining a growing lineup of story-driven rides transforming the resort.
