Tyler Perry fans can stop mourning because ‘Beauty in Black’ is not ending after all. Netflix has renewed the drama for a fourth season, reversing an earlier announcement that the show would conclude with Season 3.

The surprise turnaround comes just as the Bellarie family saga is about to get even messier. Netflix reversed its earlier decision to end the breakout drama while promoting Season 3 with new first look images ahead of an August 27 premiere date. For a show that was supposedly wrapping up, ‘Beauty in Black’ suddenly has a lot more story left to tell.

Why Netflix Changed Its Mind

Back in December, the streamer seemed ready to close the book on the Bellaries. Netflix had renewed the drama for a third season at the time, which was also billed as its last, with the announcement coming ahead of the show’s return for Season 2, Part 2. That original series, which first premiered in October 2024, centers on the ruthless, backstabbing Bellarie family behind a beauty brand and an underground trafficking ring.

The reversal did not happen in a vacuum. The renewal arrives after a successful second season, released in two parts, which spent six weeks in the Global Top 10 and reached No. 1 in 17 countries, according to Netflix. Numbers like that tend to change minds in a hurry, even when a finale was already being teased to viewers.

There is context behind the timing too. Tyler Perry had hinted earlier this year that the third season would not drop until 2027, but the season ended up ready much sooner than anticipated, which likely had something to do with the fact that Season 4 ended up being renewed. In other words, the faster production turnaround and the confidence to keep going seem to have arrived together.

What the Bellarie Family Drama Looked Like in Season 3

So what exactly are fans getting when ‘Beauty in Black’ returns. In the upcoming third season, Kimmie finally has a seat at the Bellarie table, but when a deadly family feud erupts, she is forced into an uneasy alliance with Mallory, and together they navigate a ruthless world of blackmail, revenge and buried secrets as the family wages war against one of its own, threatening to bring the entire empire crashing down.

That power shift has been building for a while. Since Season 1, viewers have watched underdog Kimmie go from dancing for survival in a Chicago strip club to sitting at the head of the table as chief operating officer of the hair-care empire in Season 2. The finale that got her there was apparently a long time coming behind the scenes as well.

Star Taylor Polidore Williams broke down the shift herself in an interview with Tudum, explaining that by the end of Season 2 the entire power structure shifts, and that Part 2 is really the moment Kimmie stops surviving and starts playing the game, adding that once she does that nobody in the Bellarie family is safe. She also spoke about the surprising new alliance at the center of the season, saying that when she read the team up in the script she thought finally, since Kimmie and Mallory had spent the whole season circling each other while also being two of the smartest players in the room.

The first look photos have already teased just how far the fallout goes. One particularly scandalous image shows Roy, Jules, and Norman being escorted by the FBI with their hands cuffed behind their backs, suggesting the new season starts right in the middle of the mess.

Tyler Perry’s Statement on ‘Beauty in Black’ Season 4

Perry himself has been vocal about why he is not ready to let go of this world yet. He shared that ‘Beauty in Black’ is back for Season 4, that the Bellarie family’s story is far from finished, and that there was so much more he wanted to explore, saying he is grateful he gets to keep telling this story. He did not stop there either. Perry also thanked the audience that has been on the ride from Day 1 for watching and sharing the series with the world, and teased that more episodes are on the way.

Industry outlets have framed the renewal as a significant show of faith from the streamer. According to Deadline, the renewal marks a major vote of confidence in one of Netflix’s biggest recent originals, especially since last December the streamer had promoted Season 3 as the series’ final installment before changing course after the show’s Global Top 10 run.

The ‘Beauty in Black’ Cast Returning for More Episodes

The ensemble driving all this chaos remains largely intact heading into the new episodes. The series is created, directed, written and executive produced by Perry, and the cast includes Taylor Polidore Williams as Kimmie, Crystle Stewart as Mallory, Amber Reign Smith, Xavier Smalls, Ricco Ross, Julian Horton and Steven G.

Not everything about the cast news has been celebratory, though. The renewal comes after cast member Xavier Smalls, who plays Angel, issued a public apology for resurfaced anti LGBTQ+ comments, saying he takes full accountability and will continue to learn and grow. It is a wrinkle that has followed the good news, even as the show barrels toward its next chapter.

As for when viewers can actually watch all this play out, the wait is refreshingly short. ‘Beauty in Black’ Season 3 will premiere August 27 on Netflix, five months after Season 2, Part 2 arrived on the streamer, with the streamer revealing the premiere date on July 28 alongside first look photos from the new season. With Season 3 arriving on that date, it marks one of Netflix’s fastest turnarounds for a scripted drama to date.

Between the family feud tearing the Bellaries apart, Kimmie and Mallory’s new alliance, and a Season 4 already locked in before Season 3 even airs, there is a lot riding on August 27. Now that the Bellarie empire is guaranteed at least one more chapter beyond this one, who do you think actually survives the fallout coming for this family.
