Netflix’s true crime slate just added one of its most disturbing entries yet, and ‘Worst Neighbor Ever’ is proving that sometimes the scariest threats come from right next door. The docuseries, part of the same franchise behind ‘Worst Roommate Ever’ and ‘Worst Ex Ever,’ dives into four separate cases where ordinary neighborly disputes spiraled into something far more sinister.

Among the four stories, the case of Jamal ‘JT’ Thomas and the Armstead family in Oakland has emerged as one of the most talked about, largely because it ends in a real life tragedy that could have been prevented. Viewers are calling it one of the hardest episodes to watch precisely because of how avoidable it all seems in hindsight.

The Oakland Neighbor From Hell Story Unfolds

Episode 3 of ‘Worst Neighbor Ever,’ titled Fear Thy Neighbor, introduces viewers to Miles and Melina Armstead, a couple who moved into the Eastmont Hills neighborhood of Oakland in October 2017 with their blended family of six. The family was warmly welcomed by their neighbors, including the Thomas family, who lived next door, and Miles even developed a friendship with their adult son Jamal Thomas, also known as JT.

That friendship, viewers learn, was not built to last. Everything changed in August 2019, when the Thomas family was evicted from their home following the death of their homeowner. While his parents moved out, JT allegedly stayed behind, squatting at the property even after his relatives had left.

During this period, JT began harassing the Armsteads for months on end, and what started as late night door knocks and bell rings eventually escalated into window smashing and verbal abuse. According to Melina, their windows were smashed with rocks or bricks more than twenty times during JT’s campaign of terror, forcing the family to board up their windows just to feel safe.

Jamal Thomas Harassment Campaign Turns Violent

The situation grew increasingly dangerous as JT’s fixation on the family intensified. One brick he threw nearly hit Miles in the head and damaged his laptop, according to the arrest warrant tied to the case. By this point, the Armsteads were barely sleeping, with Miles staying up every night flanked by a baseball bat while neighbors took turns on informal stakeouts.

Despite obtaining a restraining order, the family says the harassment never really stopped. In bodycam footage shown in the series, the responding officer seemingly downplayed the seriousness of the situation, telling both Miles and JT they were acting like 12 year old girls before shouting that grown men could not listen to simple instructions.

What happened next has become one of the most chilling moments in the docuseries. As JT was taken into custody for making criminal threats, he warned officers that he would be right back and that he was going to kill Miles next time. The Armstead family believed this arrest marked the end of their ordeal, but JT was released from custody just 48 hours later.

Miles Armstead’s Death Shakes the Oakland Community

The Armstead family reached a breaking point in 2020 and decided to move out of the home entirely. On May 1, 2020, tragedy struck when Miles returned to the property to do yard work and prepare it for sale. Thomas approached Armstead with a gun while he was on the property that day.

According to the district attorney, Miles was trying to escape his harasser when he was shot and killed. A neighbor who heard the gunshots ran outside and later described finding Miles motionless in the street, no longer breathing.

At the time of his death, Armstead was a wealth manager at Fremont Bank, a soccer coach for his kids, and a devoted parent volunteer on school field trips, according to a GoFundMe set up by a family friend. Melina was pregnant with the couple’s first child together when Miles was killed, and she gave birth to their daughter Ava two months later.

The case also exposed troubling gaps in how local law enforcement handled the family’s repeated pleas for help. The family says they called Oakland police at least 22 times, and each time officers were called, their response times reportedly grew longer while their efforts lessened.

Where Jamal Thomas Stands Today

Justice eventually caught up with JT, though not before immense damage had already been done. Thomas was convicted in July 2024 of first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and possession of a firearm by a felon with priors, with the conviction also including a gun enhancement. A judge sentenced Thomas in April 2025 to life in prison with the possibility of parole in 28 years and eight months.

He is reportedly currently incarcerated at High Desert State Prison. Separately, the Armstead family pursued civil action against local authorities over what they viewed as a preventable tragedy. In 2023, that lawsuit was settled, with the family awarded 2.4 million dollars, and civil rights attorney Adante Pointer confirmed that Oakland would pay 450,000 dollars while Alameda County would pay 1.95 million dollars.

‘Worst Neighbor Ever’ is now streaming in full on Netflix, and the Jamal Thomas story has already become one of the most discussed cases in the series thanks to how thoroughly documented the warning signs were long before the tragedy occurred. After watching everything Miles and Melina endured at the hands of their neighbor, do you think Oakland police could have stopped this tragedy before it happened, or was this always headed toward a devastating end.
