New Data Casts Doubt on Disney+’s ‘Wonder Man’ Cancellation Excuse

Marvel’s relationship with its Disney+ television slate has grown increasingly complicated in 2026, with several high-profile projects facing scrutiny over how the studio decides what stays and what gets the axe. Few decisions have generated as much backlash as the sudden cancellation of one of the platform’s best-reviewed original series.

Wonder Man‘ debuted on Disney+ in January to strong reviews, earning Yahya Abdul-Mateen II an Emmy nomination for his performance as Simon Williams. The show seemed to be building real momentum, landing a Season 2 renewal just two months after its premiere, only for Marvel to abruptly reverse course in July and cancel the series entirely, with executives citing viewership as the reason behind the decision.

New numbers are now complicating that explanation. According to data shared by entertainment analytics company Luminate, ‘Wonder Man’ drew nearly two billion minutes of watch time on Disney+ during the first half of 2026, ranking as the number 2 original season on the platform in the U.S., trailing only ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ in total watch time and ‘The Punisher: One Last Kill’ in total views. Disney+ canceled the series anyway, a decision that has now drawn renewed criticism given how the show stacked up against the rest of the platform’s original lineup.

That disconnect lines up with what Abdul-Mateen himself has said publicly about the cancellation. Speaking with Vanity Fair, the actor said, “I was told that it had something to do with the viewership numbers,” but added that he was never shown the actual figures behind the decision. He continued, “I wasn’t told what those numbers were, but ultimately, for whatever reason it was, I think they decided that it didn’t make sense for business, and that’s the decision that we live with and we keep on marching forward.”

The timing of the reversal only deepened confusion among fans and industry watchers. Reports indicated that Season 2 contracts had already been signed and schedules cleared before Marvel and Disney internally decided the show no longer made sense for the studio, despite that same calculation apparently working in the show’s favor just months earlier when the renewal was first announced.

Abdul-Mateen has also connected the cancellation to a broader pattern he sees playing out across Marvel’s slate. When asked about the online conversation tying ‘Wonder Man’s’ fate to the years-long struggles of Mahershala Ali’s long-promised ‘Blade’ film, the actor said, “I think the optics are obvious,” adding, “If I’m a big business, if I’m Disney, if I’m Marvel, I don’t want to be attached to these optics.”

For a show that critics widely praised, carrying a 91% Rotten Tomatoes score alongside its Emmy nomination, the newly surfaced Luminate figures only strengthen the argument that something other than pure viewership numbers factored into Marvel’s decision. Abdul-Mateen has continued pushing for more transparency from the studio, previously saying the cancellation “deserves” some “real, hard information” rather than a vague explanation tied to numbers nobody outside the company has actually seen.

Whether Marvel ever offers a fuller accounting of what went into the decision remains to be seen, but the timing of this streaming data couldn’t be more inconvenient for a studio already facing pointed questions about how it treats its Black-led superhero projects.
