New ‘Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight’ Game Metacritic Score Revealed — Here’s What Critics Think
The upcoming game LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight has received its first review score, and critics are mostly positive about it. According to early review data collected on Metacritic, the game has debuted with a score of 84 based on 49 critic reviews.
The game is developed by Traveller’s Tales and published by Warner Bros. Games. It is the fourth entry in the LEGO Batman series and is planned as a big new take on the franchise. The game is set to launch on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on May 22, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version coming later.
Critics say the game feels like a fresh and upgraded version of the LEGO formula. Many reviews highlight that it mixes classic LEGO humor with a more serious Batman-inspired tone. It also takes clear inspiration from the Batman: Arkham games, especially in how combat and exploration work in its open-world Gotham City.

Some reviewers also point out that the game uses Unreal Engine 5, which gives Gotham a more detailed and modern look compared to older LEGO titles. The shift away from the older TT Games engine is seen as a big step forward for the series.
The gameplay focuses on a third-person action-adventure style. Players can switch between characters like Batman, Batgirl, Nightwing, Robin, Catwoman, Jim Gordon, and Talia al Ghul. Each character has different abilities, and the game also includes puzzle-solving and co-op multiplayer. Some reviews say this smaller playable roster allows each character to feel more unique and useful compared to older LEGO games.
Critics are also talking about the game’s Gotham City, which is described as large, detailed, and full of activity. Traversal options like grappling, gliding, and driving the Batmobile make exploring the city feel smooth and fun. The Batcave customization system is also mentioned as a nice extra feature that adds more depth for players who like collecting and building.
Some reviews are very positive. One reviewer wrote: “Legacy of the Dark Knight goes beyond LEGO’s classic lighthearted tone and nostalgia. It builds a vast Gotham City with meticulous attention to detail, celebrates the legacy of the Dark Knight, and expands on the foundations laid by a legendary video game trilogy. TT Games finally decided to push its formula to the limit, and the result could be the best LEGO Batman game yet—and the closest we’ll get to reliving the golden days of Rocksteady.” This review comes from Impulsegamer and gives the game a 90 score.
Another strong review from Indigo Geek praises the game’s scale and design, saying: “It builds a vast Gotham City with meticulous attention to detail, celebrates the legacy of the Dark Knight…” and calls it possibly the best LEGO Batman game yet.
Not all reviews are perfect though. Some critics feel the game does not bring enough new ideas to the LEGO formula. For example, TrueGaming gave a more mixed view, saying it is fun and entertaining but lacks innovation compared to earlier entries.
Other reviews, like IGN Spain and Metro GameCentral, describe it as a strong and enjoyable Batman experience, especially for co-op play, even if it doesn’t fully reinvent the genre.
Overall, critics agree that LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is a polished and enjoyable game with strong visuals, fun gameplay, and a well-built Gotham City. At the same time, some reviewers feel it plays things a bit safe. The Metacritic score of 84 shows a generally positive reception ahead of its release.
