New ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Poster May Have Revealed a Major Web-Slinging Twist
A new promotional poster for Spider-Man: Brand New Day is getting fans talking after it appeared to hint at a major change to Peter Parker’s powers.
The artwork, which was shared through a Chinese media outlet as part of the movie’s promotion in China, shows Spider-Man high above the city while Peter Parker stands below among ordinary people. While the poster itself does not explain much, reports connected to the promotion suggest the movie could introduce a new twist involving Peter’s spider abilities.
According to information tied to the poster campaign, Peter may develop organic webs through a genetic mutation. The same reports claim that these changes could make it difficult for him to control his own body and powers. If true, it would be a major shift for the character and something fans have not seen from Tom Holland’s version of Spider-Man before.
Interestingly, Holland himself previously spoke about a similar idea during an interview with Empire. The actor revealed that he had a much bigger role in the creative process for Brand New Day than in previous Spider-Man movies.
According to Empire, Holland was invited into the writers’ room for the first time since joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He said he regularly met with the writers and filmmakers to discuss ideas for Peter Parker’s future.
“This is the first time in my tenure as Spider-Man that I was kind of welcomed into the writers’ room,” Holland told Empire.
During those meetings, Holland pitched an unusual concept. He wanted Peter’s powers to begin changing in unexpected ways, creating new challenges for the young hero.
“My pitch when I came to the table with it was called ‘Spider-Puberty,’” Holland said. “What happens if Peter Parker is losing control and things are changing?”
While Marvel was not interested in keeping the name, Holland said the idea behind it was well received.
“‘Spider-Puberty’ was my tagline pitch to the studio — which was immediately shot down,” he said. “But they liked the kernel of the idea and it grew into what we have in the movie now.”
The film takes place years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Following Doctor Strange’s spell, nobody remembers that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. As a result, Peter is living alone in New York and trying to move forward with his life while continuing to protect the city.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously explained that the movie returns Spider-Man to a more traditional setting. Instead of working alongside the Avengers, Peter is focused on local crime and everyday problems in New York.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton has also said that Peter is dealing with personal pain after everything he lost in No Way Home. According to the filmmaker, Peter throws himself into being Spider-Man because he is struggling to face those emotions.
The movie features a large cast, including Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Sadie Sink, Michael Mando, and Tramell Tillman.
Looking beyond this film, Holland said he hopes to help introduce future Spider heroes to audiences.
“For whoever’s next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter,” he said.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives in theaters on July 31.
