New Trailer for ‘The Greatest’ Gives Muhammad Ali the Authorized Prime Video Treatment – Release Date Revealed
Few figures in sports history have been dramatized as often as Muhammad Ali, and yet his story still feels like it has more to tell. With a new trailer for the Muhammad Ali biopic series now out, Prime Video is making its case that a full television season can capture what a 2-hour movie couldn’t.
Ali has been the subject of countless documentaries and films, most notably Michael Mann’s 2001 biopic ‘Ali’, which was approved by the champion himself. Those projects operated as independent Hollywood interpretations, though, rather than collaborations with his family. That is the gap this new project is trying to fill.
The series is called ‘The Greatest’, and the new trailer opens on an intense close-up of the fighter’s eyes before building into the story of Cassius Clay’s rise. The first authorized scripted series about Ali’s life is executive produced by Michael B. Jordan and arrives on Prime Video on November 4.

What sets this series apart is who is involved. Ali’s widow, Lonnie Ali, serves as an executive producer, making this the first scripted television adaptation developed in full cooperation with his estate. The creators describe it as an intimate exploration of a man who was a husband, a father, a brother and a son, rather than a standard sports biography.
The 8-episode limited series was created by Ben Watkins, the creator of the Prime Video hit ‘Cross’, who also serves as showrunner and directs the opening episodes. Jordan is producing through his company Outlier Society, alongside Roc Nation, Authentic Studios, Polygram Entertainment and Grace: A Storytelling Company. Prime Video says all episodes premiere on November 4 in more than 240 countries and territories.
Jaalen Best stars as Cassius Clay and Muhammad Ali, a role that marks a big step for the actor, who is known for ‘All American: Homecoming’ and ‘Magnum P.I.’. An earlier teaser showcased his physical transformation, with training montages as Ali sets his sights on becoming the youngest heavyweight champion in boxing history.
Around him is a stacked ensemble. Michael Ealy plays Malcolm X, Amin Joseph plays rival Sonny Liston, and Giovanni Ribisi plays legendary trainer Angelo Dundee. Omari Hardwick and Dana Gourrier play Ali’s parents, and Kai Parham plays his younger brother, with Erica Tazel, Reno Wilson, Aleks Paunovic and Dave Davis also in the cast.
The series was greenlit at Prime Video in July 2024, and production began in May 2025. It was filmed across Ontario, including Toronto, Cobourg and Hamilton, and spans pivotal moments throughout Ali’s career and personal life. The release date and first teaser were unveiled at the Essence Festival of Culture, with Watkins, Best and several cast members on hand.
The long-form structure may be its biggest advantage. An 8-episode format gives the story room to explore Ali’s private life, including a coming-of-age chapter that shows a different side of the fighter during his Cassius Clay years. It also allows the show to weigh the battles he fought outside the ring alongside the fights that made him famous.
Streaming has become a home for prestige biopics, and a series with the family’s blessing carries extra weight. Jordan, an Oscar winner whose own boxing credits include ‘Creed’, brings both star power and a connection to the sport to the project. If the trailer is any indication, the series is aiming for emotional intimacy as much as athletic spectacle.
Fans will find out soon whether it lives up to the name. The countdown to November 4 is on.
