Nintendo Just Revealed the First-Ever Open-World Kirby Game with a New Trailer, and It’s Coming Sooner than You’d Think
Nintendo has spent the past several years steadily testing the limits of just how far its beloved mascots can stretch beyond their traditional formulas. From open-world Zelda entries to sprawling Mario Kart tracks, the publisher has shown a clear willingness to reinvent even its most nostalgic franchises for modern audiences.
That experimentation reached one of Nintendo’s most unexpected corners during the latest Nintendo Direct, which closed out with a surprise reveal nobody quite saw coming. Kirby, the pink puffball best known for cozy platforming adventures, is apparently getting the same treatment that’s already reshaped several of Nintendo’s other flagship series.
The game is called ‘Kirby and the World Beyond,’ and it marks what appears to be the character’s first true leap into open-world territory. Revealed as the final announcement of the September 2026 Direct, the reveal trailer showed Kirby freely exploring large, sprawling environments, a significant departure from the more linear structure fans have come to expect from the series.
The trailer opened with familiar Kirby staples, including plenty of enemy-swallowing and ability-gaining, before taking a sharp narrative turn. A crack forms in the sky above Kirby’s world, revealing what looks like a Truman Show-style hidden boundary, and Kirby is soon joined by a mysterious new floating companion as he sets out to discover what actually lies beyond that broken wall.
Gameplay footage showed Kirby fighting through a battle with longtime rival King Dedede, which ends with Dedede crashing through the sky and tearing open a massive hole, revealing an even larger, more open zone waiting beyond it. Kirby also appears equipped with a newly powered-up Sword ability, capable of cleaving through parts of the environment to unlock fresh paths for exploration.
Nintendo has followed a clear pattern of opening up its most iconic franchises in recent years, and ‘Kirby and the World Beyond’ looks to be the latest example of that strategy extending to a series that had largely stuck to tighter, more contained level design throughout its history. If early impressions hold up, this would mark the first true open-world entry Kirby has ever received.
The timing lines up meaningfully with the franchise’s own history as well, with the Kirby series set to celebrate its 35th anniversary in 2027, the same year ‘World Beyond’ is scheduled to launch. Nintendo has confirmed the new title will be part of that broader anniversary celebration, giving the release extra significance beyond just being another mainline entry.
‘Kirby and the World Beyond’ wasn’t the only major announcement to come out of this particular Direct. Nintendo also revealed ‘Metroid Ravenous,’ described as a new 2D side-scrolling entry distinct from this year’s ‘Metroid Prime 4: Beyond,’ along with a Switch 2 Edition of ‘Pikmin 4’ rounding out the showcase’s biggest surprises.
That mix of announcements reinforces just how aggressively Nintendo continues to expand its first-party lineup for the Switch 2, layering fresh takes on established franchises alongside more traditional sequels to keep the platform’s momentum going well into 2027.
With a Spring 2027 release window now confirmed, exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2, fans still have several months ahead before getting their hands on the game. Nintendo has yet to reveal extensive details about the game’s mechanics or the full scope of its open world, leaving plenty of room for additional reveals as the release window approaches.
Given how well-received Nintendo’s other open-world experiments have been in recent years, expectations for ‘Kirby and the World Beyond’ are already climbing fast among longtime fans of the franchise.
