‘Obsession’ Director Curry Barker Releases New Horror Short Film ‘Mama Bear’ on YouTube Just Before Halloween
Curry Barker built his reputation on YouTube, and he has now gone back to where it all started. With Halloween just days away, the filmmaker behind the breakout horror hit ‘Obsession’ has dropped a surprise scare for fans. The new Curry Barker short film ‘Mama Bear’ is available now, and it arrives with all the tension viewers expect.
The short was released for free on his channel, ‘that’s a bad idea’, which he runs with longtime collaborator Cooper Tomlinson. It is Barker’s first project since ‘Obsession’ became one of the biggest stories of 2026, and it was announced only days before its debut.
Barker wrote, directed and edited the short, which runs about five minutes and is sponsored by Windows. The story opens with Floyd, played by Jon Lee Richardson, getting a frantic call from a friend warning that he is about to face violent retaliation, though for something he didn’t do. It quickly becomes clear that someone, or something, else is in the room with him.
The cast also includes Katie Sarife (‘Annabelle Comes Home’) as Lacey, Ericka Kreuz as Ms. Wilson and Joshua Snyder, who is billed as Floyd’s doppelgänger. Reviewers have described the short as full of the lugubrious lighting, symbolism and violence that define Barker’s style.
When the title was announced, many fans assumed it was a nod to ‘Obsession’, whose lead character is named Bear and is played by Michael Johnston. It now appears that the title actually refers to Sarife’s gun-toting Lacey, who experiences a dramatic meltdown and a catastrophic case of mistaken identity. No connection to the feature has been confirmed.
That makes the short a standalone piece, which fits its brand partnership and its length. It also gives longtime fans a reminder of what Barker does best, building suspense around an unsettling situation in a tight space.
Barker’s rise is one of the most unusual stories in recent horror. He first gained attention with YouTube shorts such as ‘The Chair’, then made the found-footage feature ‘Milk & Serial’, which he released for free online in 2024. A film made for about $800 helped lead to ‘Obsession’.
‘Obsession’ was shot independently for about $750,000, then sold to Focus Features for around $15 million after screening at the Toronto International Film Festival. It opened to $17.2 million and then grew by 39.4% in its second weekend, a record-setting spike. It ended up grossing $523 million worldwide, making it Focus’ biggest film ever and one of the highest-grossing horror films of all time.
The success has opened every door. Barker signed an eight-figure deal with Universal and Blumhouse, and he is slated to write, direct and produce a new ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ for A24. ‘Obsession’ star Inde Navarrette has also been cast as Rogue in Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ reboot.
His next feature is ‘Anything But Ghosts’, a horror comedy he co-wrote with Tomlinson, who also stars alongside him. The film is set for release on May 7, 2027, from Focus Features, and it features Bryce Dallas Howard and Aaron Paul. It follows fame-seeking wannabe ghost hunters who end up in over their heads, and it has been described as set in the same universe as ‘Obsession’.
For many fans, the appeal of ‘Mama Bear’ is that it feels like a throwback. Barker has moved into feature filmmaking, but short films remain a key part of his creative history. A five-minute scare is a reminder of why audiences connected with him in the first place.
It also works as a pre-Halloween treat. With ‘Anything But Ghosts’ still months away, it gives viewers something to watch in the meantime.
Beyond the scares, the release shows how Barker is balancing his new status with his roots. Instead of disappearing into studio projects, he is still posting work for free to the audience that supported him. That connection to the platform is a big part of his appeal.
If the short is any indication, his instincts haven’t changed.
