‘Obsession’ Just Cracked the All-Time Horror Top 10, and Its Origin Story Makes the Feat Even Wilder

Horror movies have had a genuinely strange summer in 2026, with two YouTube creators turned filmmakers upending decades of conventional box office wisdom. Between viral sketch comedy roots and shoestring production budgets, this year’s biggest scares have come from the most unlikely sources imaginable.

At the center of that story sits ‘Obsession,’ the supernatural horror film from 26-year-old director Curry Barker that has spent nearly two months rewriting box office expectations one weekend at a time. What began as a modest wide release opener has since become one of the most talked-about theatrical runs of the decade.

That momentum reached a new milestone this week, with ‘Obsession’ officially surpassing 400 million dollars at the worldwide box office. The film has grossed roughly 403 million dollars total, including 245 million dollars domestically and 157 million dollars internationally, a haul that now places it among the ten highest-grossing horror movies of all time.

The achievement is especially remarkable given how the film started its theatrical life. ‘Obsession’ debuted to a modest 17.2 million dollar opening weekend back in May, finishing in third place behind holdover releases ‘Michael’ and ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2.’ Rather than fading after its debut, the film did something almost unheard of for a wide release outside the holiday season, increasing its earnings in both its second and third weekends.

That kind of trajectory has drawn comparisons to Steven Spielberg’s ‘E.T. the Extra Terrestrial,’ one of the only other films to pull off consecutive weekend increases outside the Christmas stretch. Strong word of mouth and heavy turnout from audiences aged 18 to 34 helped fuel that unusual pattern, with young viewers reportedly making up around 75 percent of the film’s audience.

What makes the box office run even more staggering is the budget behind it. ‘Obsession’ was shot in Los Angeles in October 2024 for just 750 thousand dollars, according to Wikipedia, a production cost so small it barely registers compared to typical studio horror releases. Focus Features acquired distribution rights for the film at the Toronto International Film Festival for between 14 and 15 million dollars, reportedly the highest price ever paid for a genre film at that festival.

Barker, who got his start posting sketch comedy and horror shorts online while working at a coffee shop, has been candid about the wild ride that success has brought him. He turned down a 2 million dollar offer from a company that wanted him to rewrite the script and make the film’s lead character a more conventional hero rather than the deeply flawed figure that made the story work.

Since ‘Obsession’ hit theaters, it has already claimed the title of Focus Features’ highest-grossing release ever and became the top original live-action English-language film of the 2020s, surpassing Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners.’ The film also posted the best fourth weekend hold in horror history, a record previously held by ‘The Blair Witch Project’ since 1999.

Critics have been just as enthusiastic as audiences, with ‘Obsession’ holding a 94 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes from more than 280 reviews. Audiences surveyed by CinemaScore gave the film an A minus grade, an unusually strong result for a horror release, while roughly 70 percent of moviegoers polled by PostTrak said they would definitely recommend the film to others.

With ‘Obsession’ now firmly planted in horror’s all-time top ten worldwide, Barker’s next projects are already generating buzz of their own, including the upcoming Blumhouse feature ‘Anything But Ghosts’ and a new take on ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ for A24. Few could have predicted a low-budget passion project would end up rewriting so many box office records in a single summer.
