The horror film Obsession is continuing its surprising run at the box office, showing strong daily earnings even weeks after its release. The information comes from box office reporting shared by Variety, based on domestic theater performance data.

On its 25th day in cinemas, the film earned around 4.2 million dollars in North America. This is an unusual result for a movie at this stage of its release, since most films usually slow down significantly by that point. What makes the number stand out is that it is higher than what several major blockbuster films made on their own 25th day.

Among the films it surpassed are Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avengers: Endgame. The Force Awakens made about 3.1 million dollars on its 25th day, while Avengers: Endgame earned around 3.2 million. Spider-Man: No Way Home brought in about 2.4 million on the same day in its run. These films are some of the biggest box office hits in history, which makes Obsession’s daily performance more notable.

The film was directed by Curry Barker and produced as a smaller horror project compared to major studio releases. Its total domestic earnings have now reached around 156 million dollars. While that number is far below the biggest films of all time, the movie is still performing strongly for its scale and budget.

What makes Obsession stand out even more is its unusual box office pattern. It opened with around 17 million dollars, which was not considered a massive debut compared to blockbuster standards. However, the film showed steady growth after its release. It earned more in its second weekend than its first, and more in its third weekend than its second. This is rare for modern theatrical releases, which usually decline after opening weekend.

Industry reporting suggests that the film’s success is being driven by strong word of mouth and younger audiences. The low budget combined with steady audience interest has helped it stay in theaters longer than many expected. Even though it is ranked far below the top domestic earners overall, currently sitting outside the top 400, its daily performance continues to attract attention.

Obsession also recently reached another milestone when it passed Scary Movie to become the top film at the domestic box office on a Monday. It has continued to compete with newer releases and has even outperformed films like The Mandalorian & Grogu, Backrooms, and Masters of the Universe on certain days.

According to the same box office data, Obsession is now close to overtaking The Mandalorian & Grogu in total domestic earnings. As of early June, it was less than one million dollars behind the Star Wars-related release, which suggests it could move ahead in the rankings soon if its performance continues.

The film has also outperformed several major titles on a day-to-day basis, including Avatar: The Way of Water, Titanic, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Jurassic World, Inside Out 2, and Deadpool & Wolverine when comparing 25th day earnings. Some of these films had much larger openings and total box office runs, but Obsession is showing unusual staying power.

While Avatar and Top Gun: Maverick still hold stronger daily earnings on the same timeline, Obsession is being discussed as an example of a modern horror film that continues to build momentum after release instead of fading quickly. The report highlights how rare this pattern is in today’s box office landscape.
