“One of the Greats”: ‘The Odyssey’ Director Christopher Nolan Finally Opens the Door to a Christian Bale Reunion

Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale built one of modern cinema’s most fruitful director-actor partnerships together, spanning four films across nearly a decade of collaboration. From the psychological thriller ‘The Prestige’ to the entirety of Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, their work together helped define both of their careers in ways few pairings in Hollywood manage to replicate.

That partnership quietly went dormant after 2012’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ with Nolan moving on to collaborate with actors like Cillian Murphy, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matthew McConaughey, and most recently Matt Damon on ‘The Odyssey.’ Bale, meanwhile, has continued building his own acclaimed body of work independently, leaving fans to wonder whether the two might ever team up again.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Nolan finally addressed that question directly, confirming that he’d absolutely be open to working with Bale again. He praised the actor as one of the great talents of his generation, describing their collaborative history as consistently rewarding and expressing genuine enthusiasm at the idea of a future project together.

Oh, of course. He’s one of the great actors of his generation, and I’ve had tremendous experiences with him. I’m thrilled that they’re going to rerelease The Prestige, because it’s one of his most underrated performances. I’m just really excited to bring it to fresh audiences. We’re actually going to do 70 millimeter blowups. Wally Pfister shot it anamorphically on 35 millimeter, and he did an incredible job. I screened a 35 mil print the other day to check it, and his photography is just extraordinary. Nathan Crowley’s production design is amazing as well. So it’s going to look absolutely beautiful blown up to 70 millimeter, and we’re going to start that process in the next few weeks.

Nolan’s comments came while discussing a different kind of Bale-related news: the upcoming 20th anniversary theatrical rerelease of ‘The Prestige,’ set to return to theaters on January 21, 2027. The film, which starred Bale opposite Hugh Jackman as two rival Victorian-era magicians locked in an obsessive, escalating feud, has grown into one of Nolan’s most beloved works despite only modest box office success upon its original 2006 release.

For the anniversary run, Nolan revealed the film will be presented in newly created 70-millimeter blow-ups, struck from cinematographer Wally Pfister’s original 35-millimeter anamorphic photography. Nolan explained that the conversion work is set to begin in the coming weeks, and that he recently screened a vintage 35mm print himself just to confirm the quality of Pfister’s original cinematography before the process starts.

Nolan specifically called Bale’s performance in ‘The Prestige’ one of his most underrated, expressing genuine excitement about giving the film a chance to reach new audiences through the rerelease. The movie, adapted from Christopher Priest’s novel by Nolan and his brother Jonathan, also featured a memorable supporting cast including Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson, and David Bowie in a striking turn as inventor Nikola Tesla.

Despite earning positive reviews and eventually developing a devoted following among Nolan’s fanbase, ‘The Prestige’ earned just over $109 million worldwide against a roughly $40 million budget, modest numbers compared to the box office dominance Nolan would go on to achieve with his subsequent Batman films. Landing between ‘Batman Begins’ and ‘The Dark Knight,’ the film often gets overshadowed by the larger, more commercially explosive entries surrounding it in Nolan’s filmography.

Nolan is currently riding high off the success of ‘The Odyssey,’ which set a new global opening weekend record for the director, and it’s likely, based on his own past pacing between projects, that fans could be waiting a few years before any new Nolan film materializes. Given the roughly three-year gap between ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘The Odyssey,’ a Bale reunion, if it happens, probably wouldn’t arrive imminently.

Still, Nolan’s clear enthusiasm about working with Bale again has already sent fans into speculation mode about what kind of project might eventually bring the two back together. Whether it ends up being another period piece in the vein of ‘The Prestige’ or something entirely different remains anyone’s guess for now.

Between the emotional pull of revisiting ‘The Prestige’ on the big screen and Nolan’s open door to a future collaboration, this feels like a genuinely meaningful moment for fans who’ve long hoped to see the director and actor team up again. For now, the 70mm rerelease gives audiences a chance to revisit one of their finest collaborations while they wait to see what, if anything, comes next.
