‘Outer Banks’ Final Trailer Confirms the Pogues’ Deadly Last Ride Before Season 5
Netflix’s treasure-hunting teen drama has spent six years turning a scrappy group of North Carolina friends into one of streaming’s most reliably devoted fanbases, built on a steady mix of buried gold, dangerous enemies, and just enough teenage romance to keep the drama simmering. That formula is now heading toward its final chapter.
Fans have known since June that the fifth season would close out the series entirely, but the anticipation has ramped up considerably now that the show’s actual return date is within reach. That countdown got its biggest boost yet this week with a new trailer that finally shows just how far the Pogues are willing to go before it’s all over.
The final trailer for ‘Outer Banks’ Season 5 has arrived, confirming the final season will premiere on Netflix August 20, with all 10 episodes dropping at once as a full binge release rather than the split-season rollout the show used for its fourth installment. The trailer picks up in the immediate aftermath of Season 4’s brutal finale, which saw Chandler Groff kill his own son, JJ, right in front of Kiara.
That loss becomes the driving emotional core of the entire final season. According to Netflix’s official logline, Season 5 finds the Pogues at their absolute breaking point following JJ’s death in Morocco, stranded far from home and mourning the heart of their crew while still reeling from having lost the Blue Crown, the legendary treasure believed capable of bringing the dead back to life.
The trailer opens on a notably bleak note, with Sarah telling John B, “This feels like rock bottom,” to which he simply replies, “This is rock bottom.” From there, the footage pivots toward the group’s determination to fight back, teasing a mission built around reclaiming the Blue Crown while facing down a growing list of enemies that includes Chandler Groff, Dalia, the Corsairs, and the ever-complicated Kooks.
Series creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke have described the emotional weight of wrapping the show for good, telling Tudum, “We are over the moon to be setting out on one last trip with the Pogues. Being back on set with our cast for this final round is nothing short of bittersweet and surreal.”
Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Carlacia Grant, and Drew Starkey are all set to return for the send-off, alongside the show’s signature blend of high-stakes action and treasure-hunting mystery. Per Netflix’s description, the season promises to be the most explosive installment yet, complete with motorcycle jumps off cliffs and dirt bike chases against airborne planes.
Ahead of the season’s release, Netflix is hosting “Pogues for Life: A Fan Farewell Event” in Los Angeles on August 15, featuring a cast conversation, an inaugural fan-voted awards show called the Pogue Awards, and an advance screening of the season premiere for attendees, with a livestream available on Tudum for fans who can’t make it in person.
For a series that’s built its entire identity around treasure hunts, found family, and increasingly ambitious set pieces, sending the Pogues off with their biggest and most dangerous mission yet feels like a fitting way to close the book. Whether they finally track down the Blue Crown, and what it might mean for the friends they’ve already lost, remains the last mystery standing before August 20.
