Disney has kept its live-action remake machine running steadily over the past decade, and the studio’s latest target is one of its most beloved modern animated hits. ‘Tangled,’ the 2010 film that reinvigorated the Disney Princess brand with its take on the Rapunzel fairy tale, is now getting its own live-action adaptation, joining a growing slate of reimagined classics currently in various stages of production across the studio.

That remake has been steadily filling out its cast in recent weeks, with Teagan Croft stepping into the role of Rapunzel and Milo Manheim playing Flynn Rider opposite her. Kathryn Hahn has also joined as the villainous Mother Gothel, giving the production a cast with real star power behind its central roles.

The latest addition to that lineup is Caitríona Balfe, best known for her long-running lead role in ‘Outlander,’ who has joined the film as Queen Arianna. Balfe’s casting was confirmed after set videos surfaced showing her filming the story’s emotional reunion between Rapunzel and her parents, appearing alongside the actor playing King Frederic.

Queen Arianna is a quietly pivotal figure in the animated original, serving as the grieving mother whose lost daughter drives much of the story’s central mystery. Casting an actor of Balfe’s caliber for the role signals that the remake intends to give the character genuine emotional weight rather than treating her as a background figure.

While Balfe’s casting has been effectively confirmed through the surfacing set footage, some details around the production remain unsettled. It still isn’t entirely clear who will be playing opposite her as King Frederic, with some reports pointing to Diego Luna, though that claim carries some doubt given that Luna’s role has separately been described as an original character created specifically for this remake rather than an adaptation of an existing one.

Also unconfirmed is exactly who portrayed the Stabbington brothers in the same set footage, with Patrick and Hugo McPherson reportedly shown filming scenes as the villainous duo. Disney and Balfe herself have yet to formally confirm her casting through an official announcement, leaving fans to piece together details from on-set sightings and leaked footage for now, much like they did with earlier reports placing her near the shooting location before the confirming videos ever emerged.

Balfe’s move into the world of ‘Tangled’ comes right on the heels of wrapping her signature role as Claire Fraser across eight seasons of ‘Outlander,’ opposite Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser. That final season drew a notably divided response, earning a perfect 100% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes while audiences landed at a considerably cooler 54%, a split that has become somewhat common for long-running series wrapping up beloved storylines.

Beyond ‘Tangled,’ Balfe has a packed slate of upcoming projects lined up, including ‘The Housekeeper,’ ‘Sense and Sensibility,’ ‘A Long Winter,’ and ‘Tenzing.’ With the live-action ‘Tangled’ remake continuing to add high-profile talent and Irish actors in particular finding steady work across major international productions, Balfe’s casting fits neatly into a broader pattern shaping the project’s ensemble.

No release date has been set yet for the live-action ‘Tangled’ remake, and the original animated film remains available to stream on Disney+ in the meantime. With casting still actively coming together and set footage continuing to surface online, fans will likely have plenty more details to piece together before Disney makes any official announcements.

How excited are you to see Caitríona Balfe play Queen Arianna in Disney's live-action Tangled?
