Penélope Cruz (52) Is Sleek, Sultry and Stunning in Black as She Meets Fans at the ‘La Bola Negra’ London Film Festival Screening
Every October, London turns its biggest screens into a runway for the year’s most talked-about films, and the BFI London Film Festival has never been short on star power. This year’s edition marks the festival’s 70th year, with 251 features, shorts, series and immersive works from 88 countries across 12 days. Somewhere in that crowded lineup, one Spanish epic has been drawing a particularly glamorous crowd.
That film is ‘La Bola Negra‘, the ambitious drama from directing duo Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, known as Los Javis. It was programmed as one of the festival’s Galas at the Royal Festival Hall, a spot reserved for the event’s biggest titles. The film has been building buzz since its premiere at Cannes, which makes its London stop feel like a victory lap.
Then came the moment that had the crowd buzzing. Penélope Cruz appeared at the ‘La Bola Negra’ screening and stopped to meet fans, signing for admirers at the barrier while dressed in a sleek tailored black look topped with a black beret. Reports describe her ensemble as a black-and-white Ralph Lauren outfit, and the effortless, monochrome styling suited the film’s moody, romantic world.

The story follows three generations of men in Spain across three periods: 1932, 1937 and 2017. In the first, Carlos wants to belong in a divided country, and in the second, a soldier named Sebastián finds connection across enemy lines. In the modern timeline, Alberto uncovers a long-hidden family secret.
Penelope Cruz on the possibility of becoming the first person to be nominated twice in the same category at the Oscars for La Bola Negra and The Invite: “I’m very grateful that I’ve had the opportunities and that I’m getting so much love back… anything else, I should not be thinking about”

The film draws on the work of Federico García Lorca, whose life and writing shape the story even though he is not its central character. The title comes from one of his final unfinished works. Calvo, Ambrossi and Alberto Conejero co-wrote the screenplay, adapting Conejero’s play along with other Lorca texts, and the result has been described as a queer epic about desire, repression and memory.
The film’s road to London has been impressive. It premiered in competition at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, where it earned a long standing ovation and a Palme d’Or nomination. Calvo and Ambrossi won the festival’s Best Director award, sharing it with Paweł Pawlikowski.
Critics have praised its ambition, emotional force and historical scope, with Cruz’s scene singled out by many reviewers. Not everyone was convinced, though, and some criticism focused on excess and uneven execution, with one outlet calling it overblown melodrama. At 2 hours 35 minutes, it is a big swing, and the divided reactions are part of the conversation.

Spain has also submitted the film as its entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars. That adds a layer of awards-season momentum to an already high-profile run. For Cruz, the London appearance is another high-profile moment in the film’s run.
