Russo Brothers Tease a Bold Reboot with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’: ‘A Complete Reinvention’
Avengers: Doomsday is being described as a major reset for the Marvel Cinematic Universe by its directors, the Russo Brothers.
The Russo Brothers, Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, are known for directing some of Marvel’s biggest films, including “Captain America: Civil War” and “Avengers: Endgame.” In the new interview, they spoke about how “Doomsday” is not just another sequel, but something that changes the direction of the story in a big way.
Anthony Russo said the new film continues ideas that started in earlier Marvel stories. He pointed back to the conflict between Tony Stark and Steve Rogers in “Civil War” and how fans still debate their choices today. He explained that this kind of character tension will still matter in the new film. He said, “Tony Stark and Steve Rogers remain very empathetic and root-able and you’ll see to this day people are divided over who was was more relatable in that film.”
He also said that those same character themes continue into “Doomsday,” even though the story is moving in a new direction. According to coverage from the interview posted online, he suggested that the emotional conflict from past films is still part of the bigger story being told.
Joe Russo also spoke during the interview and talked about how Marvel storytelling keeps changing. He said there is space for different types of stories, and that audiences should not expect everything to feel the same. He said, “I mean, there’s a place for everything. It’s a place for close-ended expressions. There’s a place for serialized storytelling. It should all coexist. Why not? I mean, I want a diversity of experiences. I don’t want to have to just get one thing over and over again. And what Marvel’s done better than anybody in history is that serialized storytelling at scale.”
Joe Russo then added that the new film will feel very different from what came before. He said, “And ‘Doomsday’ is, you know, a complete reinvention. It’s another swing. I don’t think the audience is expecting it at all what happens in the movie — and its tone and its subject matter. I’m hoping it feels like another profound shift for them in that serialized story.”
The comments match earlier remarks from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, who said at CinemaCon that “Doomsday” will continue the story after “Avengers: Endgame.” That statement raised discussion because many Marvel projects have been released since “Endgame,” but the film is still expected to connect back to that era.
The cast for “Avengers: Doomsday” is very large. It includes actors like Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, Simu Liu, and many others. Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans are also set to appear, even after their earlier exits from the franchise.
The film is directed by the Russo Brothers and written by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely. It is produced by Marvel Studios and the Russos.
“Avengers: Doomsday” is scheduled to release in theaters on December 18, and it will be followed by “Avengers: Secret Wars,” which is set for December 17, 2027.
