Ryan Condal Explains Why ‘House of the Dragon’ Cut Nettles and Gave Her Story to Rhaena
House of the Dragon has never been afraid to change major parts of George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, but one of the biggest changes coming into the latest season is the decision to remove Nettles and give her storyline to Rhaena Targaryen. The choice has created plenty of discussion among fans because Nettles was one of the most mysterious and memorable dragonriders in the original story.
In the book, Nettles is a young dragonseed who becomes the rider of Sheepstealer, one of the wild dragons living in Westeros. Unlike many Targaryens, Nettles does not claim her dragon through blood or tradition. Instead, she earns Sheepstealer’s trust by slowly feeding the creature, making her one of the most unusual dragonriders in the entire Dance of the Dragons.
House of the Dragon takes a very different approach. Instead of introducing Nettles, the series gives Sheepstealer to Rhaena Targaryen, the daughter of Daemon and Laena Velaryon. The change turns Rhaena’s long struggle without a dragon into one of the central emotional stories of the series.
Showrunner Ryan Condal explained that the decision was connected to the way the show tells its story. Speaking about the change, Condal said it felt more natural to focus on an existing member of the Targaryen family rather than introduce another important character late in the story.
“It just felt to us that because again, this story is told in point of view, that it felt more apt as this is a family story to where we had the opportunity to involve one of the family members in the storyline,” Condal explained.
For Rhaena, claiming Sheepstealer represents the moment she has spent years waiting for. Throughout House of the Dragon, she has often felt different from the rest of her family because she was the only Targaryen child without a dragon. While her siblings and cousins formed powerful bonds with dragons, Rhaena was left feeling like she did not fully belong.

Condal said that emotional journey was the main reason the writers decided to give her Nettles’ role. “Because Rhaena has been set up since Season 1 as the member of this family who doesn’t have a dragon and basically her sole identity is the Targaryen kid who doesn’t have a dragon, it felt like that was a character that we had already set this long runway for,” he told fans.
However, the change also comes with a darker side. In Fire & Blood, Nettles’ relationship with Sheepstealer is based on patience and understanding. In House of the Dragon, Rhaena gains the dragon but struggles to control it, creating a situation where her greatest dream becomes a dangerous problem.
Condal described the storyline as a “monkey’s paw kind of moment” for Rhaena. She finally gets the one thing she has always wanted, but the power that comes with it brings consequences she never expected.
The removal of Nettles changes more than just one character’s role. In the book, Nettles becomes important because of her mysterious connection with Daemon Targaryen and her unique place among the dragonriders. By replacing her with Rhaena, the show shifts the focus away from an outsider discovering power and toward a family member finally finding her place.
Whether fans will accept the change remains to be seen, but House of the Dragon’s choice shows how the series continues to reshape Fire & Blood into a more personal family drama. What do you think about Rhaena taking over Nettles’ storyline? Share your thoughts in the comments.
