Samuel L. Jackson and Eva Green Reunite for a Deadly Game of Marital Betrayal in ‘Just Play Dead’ Trailer
Samuel L. Jackson has spent decades proving he can headline nearly any genre, but his latest project pairs him with a co-star audiences haven’t seen him opposite in years. The two previously crossed paths on Tim Burton’s 2016 fantasy film ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,’ though their scenes together were brief.
Nearly a decade later, that pairing is finally getting the spotlight it deserves. Jackson and Eva Green are teaming up again, this time as the leads of a twisted marital thriller that trades supernatural fantasy for cons, betrayal, and a whole lot of insurance fraud.
The film, titled ‘Just Play Dead,’ has now dropped its full trailer, giving audiences their clearest look yet at a story built entirely around two spouses trying to outsmart, and ultimately outlive, each other. Directed by Martin Campbell, best known for ‘GoldenEye’ and ‘Casino Royale,’ the film centers on wealthy criminal mastermind Jack Wolfe, played by Jackson, who finds himself cornered by federal investigators.
Jack’s solution is to fake his own death, collect a $30 million life insurance payout, and pin the murder on his wife Nora’s surfer lover, Chad. Green plays Nora, who has been suffocated by Jack’s controlling grip for years and has quietly hatched her own scheme: actually kill Jack, frame Chad for it, and walk away with the fortune herself.
What follows is a cat-and-mouse battle where neither spouse can fully trust the other, and neither is willing to lose. Jack, always operating a step ahead, sets his own trap designed to turn Nora and Chad against one another, dragging the unsuspecting lover deeper into a scheme he never asked to be part of. The film’s ensemble also includes Maria Pedraza, known for ‘Money Heist,’ along with Eoin Macken, Lee Boardman, Jason Fernández, Nicole Ansari-Cox, and Dar Dash. Behind the scenes, the screenplay comes from Dan Gordon, the writer behind ‘Rambo: Last Blood,’ giving the film a pedigree in both slick genre plotting and sharp dialogue.
Green has spoken about what drew her back to working with Jackson, describing the project as a chance to dive into dark comedy again after wanting to revisit the genre for some time. Production companies behind the film include Head Gear Films and Gemstone Films, with Highland Film Group handling international sales, and the project reportedly wrapped filming in the Canary Islands.
‘Just Play Dead’ is set to hit theaters on November 12, positioning it as a late-fall counter-programming option against typical awards-season dramas. Given Campbell’s track record with slick, tightly plotted thrillers and Jackson’s history of elevating pulpy genre material, expectations are high for a film that leans fully into its twisty premise.
The trailer arrives after the project already generated buzz on the festival circuit, having secured international distribution deals during this year’s Cannes market. With its sun-drenched setting, high body count, and a battle of wits between two performers who clearly relish playing morally bankrupt characters, ‘Just Play Dead’ looks positioned to become one of the more entertaining surprises of the fall movie season.
