Sandra Bullock is speaking openly about artificial intelligence and how the film industry should deal with it, saying Hollywood cannot ignore it but also needs to stay careful.

The actress made her comments during the CNBC Changemakers Summit, where she was asked about the growing use of AI in entertainment. The discussion came up after AI-generated fan-made trailers of her upcoming film Practical Magic 2 started spreading online, using her likeness in ways she did not create.

When asked how she felt seeing AI versions of herself, Bullock reacted calmly and even lightly, saying, “Well, there could be worse [things] with my image!”

She then explained her wider view on the technology. Bullock said the industry cannot avoid AI anymore and needs to understand how it works instead of rejecting it. She stressed that it should be used in a responsible and creative way, not something to fear or ignore.

As she put it, “But it’s here. We have to observe it. We have to understand it. We have to lean into it. We have to use it in a really constructive and creative way, make it our friend rather than — I mean, we have to be incredibly cautious and aware of it because there are people who will use it for evil and not good.”

Bullock also added that while there are risks, she still believes AI has a place in filmmaking and storytelling. She described it as something the industry will have to learn to live with, even if it feels uncomfortable at times.

She said, “I do feel that there’s a place for it… It’s here. We have to just be friends in some dark way.”

Her comments come as the debate around AI in Hollywood continues to grow. Some in the industry are openly critical. Former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne has warned that AI is taking in too much human-created material, calling it a concern for creativity.

At the same time, others are more optimistic. Actress Reese Witherspoon has encouraged people, especially women in the industry, to learn about AI instead of avoiding it. She has pointed out that many jobs traditionally held by women could be affected more quickly by automation, and she has urged people to stay informed rather than fall behind.

The topic is clearly dividing opinion in entertainment, with Bullock taking a middle position. She is not rejecting AI, but she is also warning that it needs clear limits and responsibility.

Her view reflects a growing reality in Hollywood. AI is already being used in fan content, marketing, and early production tools, and the industry is now trying to figure out how to control it without losing creative trust.

It is still unclear how far AI will go in filmmaking, but voices like Bullock’s suggest the focus is shifting toward adaptation rather than resistance.
