‘Scary Movie’s’ Original Ending Had a Melissa Barrera Joke — Until ‘Scream 7’ Changed Everything

During production of Scary Movie 6, a planned joke referencing Melissa Barrera and her exit from the Scream franchise was ultimately removed from the final cut.

Director Michael Tiddes explained in a spoiler discussion with The Hollywood Reporter that the gag was written into an alternate ending but was later scrapped during post-production as the creative team reconsidered its timing and tone.

According to Tiddes, the joke was developed while the film was being shaped alongside another major change to the ending. The team had already been reworking the finale through additional photography, and the Melissa Barrera reference was part of a broader set of ideas tied to the film’s connection to modern Scream entries. However, as Scream 7 was also moving through development at the same time, the filmmakers ultimately decided to step away from the reference.

Tiddes explained that there was no direct coordination with the Scream 7 production, and both projects were being created separately without shared scripts or internal communication. Because of that separation, the team behind Scary Movie 6 had to make its own judgment about whether the joke still worked once Scream 7’s direction became clearer through public marketing.

In the interview, Tiddes said the idea had originally felt like it fit within the franchise’s meta style, which often includes commentary on real-world Hollywood events and casting controversies. He noted that the joke was consistent with the tone of earlier drafts, but once the ending shifted and the film’s structure changed, the reference no longer felt necessary.

He also acknowledged that reactions to Barrera’s Scream departure were divided, which added another layer of sensitivity. While he did not describe the joke in detail, he made it clear that the team considered audience perception before deciding to remove it. The goal, he said, was to keep the film focused on broader parody elements rather than a specific real-world situation that might distract from the story.

The removal happened alongside other major rewrites in the final stages of production. Scary Movie 6 underwent additional photography to refine its ending, and during that process, several ideas were either added or cut to better match the final tone of the movie. The Barrera reference was one of the elements that did not make the final version.

Tiddes emphasized that the franchise is built on reacting quickly to pop culture, but also on knowing when not to include certain material if it risks overshadowing the comedy. He suggested that while the joke may have worked in an earlier draft, the evolving context around both franchises made it less appropriate by the time of release.

Ultimately, the Melissa Barrera joke became one of several cut ideas from a constantly evolving script. Its removal reflects the film’s broader approach during post-production, where timing, cultural sensitivity, and shifting franchise developments all influenced what remained in the final cut of Scary Movie 6.
