‘Secret Invasion’: Disney+ Releases Official Trailer for the Next MCU Series

Currently, the latest Disney+ series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, starring Tatiana Maslany, which introduced the title character into the MCU and also brought Charlie Cox’s Daredevil back into the MCU. Marvel Studios’ next Disney+ series was initially set to be released in early 2023, but the studio reconsidered its schedule and decided to give fans more free time between each new series to put a growing MCU fatigue.

Today, Marvel Studios and Disney+ released the official trailer for the next MCU mini-series — Secret Invasion! The series is a follow-up to the MCU movies Captain Marvel and Spider-Man: Far From Home. The series will see the return of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as Talos. Ben Mendelsohn debuted as Talos in the Captain Marvel movie, which took place in the mid-90s. The movie showed us how Nick Fury and Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers met Talos and his family and, after initially thinking they were enemies, helped them in a fight against the Kree. The movie ended with Captain Marvel leaving Earth with the Skrulls to help them find a new habitable planet to live on. Fast forward to 2023, after Nick Fury came back from the dead due to Hulk’s snap in Avengers: Endgame.

After he attended Tony Stark’s funeral, Fury re-established contact with Skrulls and asked Talos and his wife Soren to shapeshift into himself and Maria Hill to assist Spider-Man while he took a galactic vacation on the Skrull flagship. Talos gave Tony Stark’s glasses, which were powered by the program known as E.D.I.T.H., to Peter Parker, and they also witnessed Mysterio’s attempt to become a false hero of the world. After Spider-Man defeated Mysterio, Talos, and Soren called Fury to deliver him a message on their progress, after which Fury ended his vacation.

Secret Invasion is one of the most known comic books ever published in the long history of Marvel Comics. The source material followed a storyline in which the Skrulls were shapeshifting and replacing many heroes of the Marvel Universe with impostors. It’s likely that the series won’t follow the source material closely, but the idea of Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for years will remain.

Secret Invasion was first announced in December 2020. Apart from Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn, Cobie Smulders will also reprise the role of Maria Hill. Don Cheadle will return as James Rhodes, and Martin Freeman will reprise the role of Everett Ross. The MCU newcomers in this series will be Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke as Talos’ daughter G’iah, The Crown star Olivia Colman as Sonya Falsworth, Kingsley Ben-Adir as Gravik, Killian Scott as Fiz, and Rune Temte as Bron-Char.

Created by Kyle Bradstreet, the Secret Invasion series will consist of six episodes. The series is set to premiere on June 21, 2023.

He calls them "the four rulers of the fantasy genre." He loves to write about anything spawned from those franchises (books, games, movies...), as well as anything branded with the Marvel or DC logo. Video games and their adaptations are also something he follows faithfully since he's a big fan of story-driven single-player games like Assassin's Creed, The Last of Us, Uncharted, etc. His favorite video game ever is Red Dead Redemption 2.
