Considering how many MCU shows had aired on Disney+ since January 2021, when WandaVision premiered, and knowing how many of them Marvel Studios is currently developing, it’s really interesting how it’s been seven months since the latest Disney+ MCU series. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law concluded last October, and there was no other MCU series on the platform if we exclude TV specials Werewolf by Night and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

There have been some reports that claim Marvel Studios is reconsidering their release schedule due to the growing superhero fatigue some fans have started to feel. Still, Marvel Studios never provided an official statement on that matter. Secret Invasion was initially announced to premiere in “early 2023”, and the official premiere date was later set to June 21, 2023, which backs those reports in some way.

We’re halfway through this year, and it feels actually weird that we only got two MCU projects so far; Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the first movie of Phase 5, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, James Gunn’s last Marvel movie which concluded the trilogy. The next big-screen MCU event will be The Marvels, which is set to be released in November. Still, until then, the fans will get Secret Invasion, an upcoming six-episode TV series based on the homonymous comic book storyline from 2008.

Ben Mendelsohn star says the upcoming series is for adults!

Australian actor Ben Mendelsohn first joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2019’s Captain Marvel. He played Talos, a Skrull General who was presented as the movie’s main villain before it was revealed that he collaborated with Mar-Vell to save the Skrull refugees from the Kree Empire. Talos eventually joined forces with Carol Danvers, Nick Fury, and Maria Rambeau to save Talos’ family and other Skrulls from the Kree soldiers led by Yon-Rogg.

Mendelsohn briefly reprised the role in the post-credit scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home, which directly teased the upcoming Secret Invasion series in which he’ll return with Talos alongside Samuel L. Jackson, who reprises the role of Nick Fury. While talking with USA Today, Mendelsohn said the Secret Invasion series is something adult viewers will appreciate.

“This is one the grownups can dig. It’s mental. I hope it ends up being one of the coolest things that they’ve done. […] The relationship between Talos and Fury is sort of tighter than it’s ever been and really not good. I don’t know if (Talos) is like Abbott to his Costello (but) it’s something that the audience will enjoy without losing how bad the situation gets.”

The Secret Invasion series will also see the return of Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Don Cheadle as James Rhodes, and Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross. MCU newcomers in this series are Olivia Colman as Sonya Falsworth, Emilia Clarke as Talos’ daughter G’iah, and Kingsley Ben-Adir as Gravik, the series’ main villain.

Created by Kyle Bradstreet, the Secret Invasion series will premiere on June 21, 2023, exclusively on Disney+.
