Seems Like Ryan Gosling’s MCU Debut Will Come Before His 2028 Solo ‘Ghost Rider’ Movie

Ghost Rider has spent years as one of Marvel’s most talked-about missing pieces, a character fans have campaigned for on nearly every casting rumor thread imaginable. Between Comic-Con wishlists and endless speculation about which version of Johnny Blaze might finally make it to the MCU, the Spirit of Vengeance has become something of a running joke in fan circles about promises Marvel never quite delivers on.

That changed dramatically at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, when Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige confirmed Ryan Gosling as the MCU’s official Ghost Rider, with the actor set to headline his own standalone film in 2028 directed by Shawn Levy. It capped off years of speculation and put an end to a rumor mill that had cycled through names like Norman Reedus before finally landing on Gosling.

Now attention is turning to whether Gosling’s introduction as the character might happen sooner than that solo film, with new reporting suggesting he could reportedly appear as Ghost Rider in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ playing the Johnny Blaze version of the character according to insider Jeff Sneider. The timing would put Gosling’s live-action debut as the flaming-skulled antihero well ahead of his own dedicated movie.

This wouldn’t be the first time Ghost Rider’s name got attached to an Avengers crossover before a solo film materialized. Sneider had previously reported on The Hot Mic podcast that Marvel was actively casting the role for ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ specifically noting the studio was searching for a fresh take on the character rather than bringing back Nicolas Cage’s earlier portrayal from the 2007 and 2011 films.

That earlier casting search ultimately produced Gosling’s confirmation, but questions have lingered about exactly which film would mark his first appearance. As of Comic-Con, Ghost Rider was not officially listed as part of the confirmed cast for either ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ or ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ leaving plenty of room for Marvel to keep his involvement under wraps until closer to release.

The scheduling puzzle is worth untangling here. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ currently sits on the release calendar for December 18, 2026, while ‘Secret Wars’ follows roughly a year later on December 17, 2027, giving Marvel a full year of runway between the two crossover events. Gosling’s own Ghost Rider solo film isn’t expected until sometime in 2028, meaning a ‘Secret Wars’ cameo would effectively serve as his proper introduction to audiences well before his own story gets told.

Feige has also hinted the character’s origins trace back to Gosling himself rather than a top-down studio decision. The Marvel boss has said Gosling was the one who came up with the vision for bringing Ghost Rider into the MCU, a detail that adds some context to why the actor has spent years publicly campaigning for a role he’s now finally landed.

‘Secret Wars’ is also notable for being positioned as a soft reset for the franchise, with Marvel’s theatrical slate between now and 2028 limited to just ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’ before Gosling’s solo film and ‘Black Panther 3’ arrive. That scarcity of releases makes any confirmed or rumored cameo carry extra weight, since ‘Secret Wars’ is shaping up to be the last major theatrical touchpoint before the MCU’s next phase truly begins.

Whether Gosling’s Ghost Rider actually ignites the screen in ‘Secret Wars’ remains unconfirmed by Marvel, but the timing lines up well enough that fans have reason to keep watching for an official announcement. For a character that’s been promised and delayed so many times before, even a rumor this specific is enough to get the fandom buzzing again.
