Selena Gomez’s Legal Team Fires Back After Wondermind Fraud Lawsuit

Selena Gomez has built a business empire that extends well beyond her music and acting career, with her mental health startup Wondermind standing as one of her most personal ventures since launching in 2021. Co-founded alongside her mother, Mandy Teefey, and business partner Daniella Pierson, the company was built around making mental wellness resources more accessible through candid conversations, physical tools, daily content, and a supportive online community.

That venture has faced mounting scrutiny over the past year, following a September 2025 report from The Cut detailing alleged mismanagement and financial struggles within the company. Investors say that report first revealed how deeply troubled Wondermind’s operations had become, despite having invested nearly $1.2 million into the startup back in 2022 based on promises the company never fulfilled.

Those tensions escalated into a full legal battle this week when two investor-backed companies, Wondermind SRS 44 LLC and Bespoke Wondermind SPV LLC, filed a federal lawsuit in Delaware on Thursday accusing Gomez, Teefey, and Pierson of securities fraud, common-law fraud, and breach of contract. The suit alleges the founders misrepresented Wondermind’s leadership, infrastructure, and business partnerships, including claimed deals with JPMorgan Chase and Fidelity that investors say never materialized.

Gomez’s legal team responded forcefully to the allegations. Her attorney, Matthew Rosengart, told People in a statement that the claims are “completely meritless, both factually and legally,” adding that the team would “vigorously defend these false allegations” and was already preparing a motion to dismiss what he described as baseless claims against her.

According to the complaint, investors were drawn to Wondermind specifically because of Gomez’s involvement, with the company promoting her ability to market the brand to an audience of more than 500 million people across her social media platforms. The suit claims Gomez had signed a contract obligating her to actively build the company as its head of marketing, but later ignored that agreement entirely.

The lawsuit also alleges that the founders concealed the company’s deteriorating financial condition from investors for more than three years, only for the true scope of the problems to surface once The Cut’s reporting became public. Investors say they sent a formal notice of rescission in November demanding their money back, but claim the defendants failed to respond in substance and instead continued to mislead them.

Beyond the financial allegations, the lawsuit also points to strain within Gomez’s family as a factor in the company’s unraveling. The suit claims Gomez largely disengaged from Wondermind’s operations due to a long-running personal dispute with her mother, who served as co-chief executive officer throughout the company’s existence.

Teefey has also pushed back on the allegations, providing her own denial to The New York Times following the lawsuit’s filing. Pierson, the third named defendant, has separately denied claims that she misappropriated investor funds, according to earlier reporting on the dispute that first surfaced questions about the company’s internal struggles.

With Gomez’s legal team now moving to have the case dismissed entirely, the dispute is likely to play out in court over the coming months as both sides stake out sharply different accounts of what happened to the once-promising startup. Wondermind, which claimed a $95 million valuation when it initially sought investment, has not commented publicly on the lawsuit beyond the statements from its named defendants.
