Seth Rogen has spoken strongly against the use of AI in writing, saying that people who rely on it to create scripts or stories should not call themselves writers. His comments were made during an interview with Brut at the Cannes Film Festival, which is the source of this information.

Rogen was asked about AI tools being used in filmmaking and storytelling. He made it clear that he does not see value in using AI to replace the writing process. He said he often sees social media posts claiming that “Hollywood is finished” because of AI, but he disagrees with what he sees being produced.

He said, “I don’t understand what it’s supposed to do,” when talking about AI in creative work. He also described some AI-generated videos he had seen online, saying they were low quality and not impressive.

Rogen continued by criticizing the idea of skipping real writing work. He said, “Every time I see a video on Instagram that’s like, ‘Hollywood is cooked,’ what follows is the most stupid dog shit I’ve ever seen in my life. And if your instinct is to use AI and not go through that process. You shouldn’t be a writer. Because you’re not writing.”

He then explained that writing is something he enjoys because it takes effort and time. For him, the process is the point, not something to avoid. He said, “Go do something else. And if you don’t want to go through the process, you shouldn’t be a writer. The idea of a tool that makes me write less is not appealing to me, because I like writing.”

At Cannes, Rogen is promoting a new animated film called “Tangles.” The film follows a young woman dealing with her mother’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis. It uses traditional animation instead of AI tools or digital shortcuts.

Rogen pointed out that the film was made with hand-drawn animation. He said, “Not at all. It’s hand-drawn animation. Every frame has a human touch to it, which is great.”

The production team also shared personal connections to the story. Producer Miller Rogen, who is Seth Rogen’s wife, said she connected deeply with the film because of her own family experience with Alzheimer’s. This was reported in an interview with Variety.

She said, “There were so many similarities between my family and Sarah’s family. Our moms were both teachers who were diagnosed in their early 50s. I related to the denial, fear and sense of aloneness that can come with a dementia diagnosis.”

The discussion around AI and creativity continues to grow in Hollywood, but Rogen’s comments show a clear position. He supports traditional writing and human-driven storytelling, and he sees that process as something that should not be replaced or avoided.
