There is a quiet revolution happening in the anime world, and it does not involve giant robots, magic academies, or teenagers discovering they have secret powers. It is happening in the parking lot behind a supermarket, between a burnt-out salaryman and a cashier with a secret, and it is resonating with audiences in a way that very few anime have managed to replicate.

The story at the heart of ‘Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You’ is a seinen romantic comedy and slice-of-life with a gentle, bittersweet tone. It centers on Sasaki, a 45-year-old overworked salaryman, and Yamada, a friendly supermarket cashier who leads something of a double life.

When Sasaki cannot find Yamada after a particularly trying day, a striking woman invites him to smoke with her. He thinks he has made a new smoking buddy in the cool, teasing Tayama, completely unaware that he already knows her.

The series began life as a webcomic posted on Twitter in March 2022 before Jinushi transitioned it into a serialized manga in Square Enix’s Monthly Big Gangan magazine. The manga won the 2022 Next Manga Award in the web category and ranked high in bookstore recommendations, resonating because its portrayal of adult life deals honestly with themes of burnout, identity, and the small but meaningful moments that make human connection matter.

The anime adaptation is where things have gotten truly extraordinary. Kicking off its summer lineup early, Crunchyroll followed the Japanese streaming platform ABEMA with a special pre-release of ‘Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You,’ consisting of 12 mini-episodes that premiered on June 3.

All 12 episodes, with durations ranging from nine to 18 minutes, dropped for premium members, with this release featuring bespoke theme songs, while free viewers will gain access on June 26. The anime’s full television broadcast is set to premiere on TBS and 27 other channels in July, airing every Thursday at 11:56 p.m. JST.

The viewer response to that early release has been nothing short of historic. ‘Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You’ achieved a perfect 5-star rating on Crunchyroll, earning around 14,000 ratings in the first three days after its premiere, a figure higher than what many anime accomplish after completing their entire broadcasts.

The anime also currently boasts a rating of 8.50 on the MyAnimeList website, representing one of the best receptions among the anime of 2026.

Although shonen anime full of battles and high school romances aimed at younger audiences remain among the most popular titles in the industry, many of the new-generation anime currently sweeping the charts are slice-of-life adaptations that offer a sentimental and bittersweet perspective on the beauty and hardships of adulthood. ‘Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You’ sits squarely in that growing space, and it is landing harder than most.

The anime is arriving at a moment when there is a broader appetite for mature, understated stories, following the trail that shows like ‘A Sign of Affection’ and ‘Wotakoi’ blazed in making room for narratives that do not hinge on adolescent melodrama. What sets this particular series apart is the specificity of its emotional core.

Sasaki is not a hero or an aspirational figure. He is tired. He is overlooked. And the small warmth he finds in a supermarket checkout line is painfully, universally relatable to anyone who has ever found unexpected comfort in an unexpected place.

The anime is directed by Tadato Suzuki and Aoi Mori at Asahi Production, the same duo behind ‘Gushing Over Magical Girls.’ The cast features Takuya Sato as Sasaki and Seena Hoshiki as Yamada and Tayama, with series composition handled by Mio Inoue and character design by Yasuka Otaki. The opening theme is performed by Zutomayo, while the ending song ‘Fiction’ comes from imase. It is a creative team that clearly understood the material they were working with

There is strong evidence that ‘Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You’ could become a new standard for slice-of-life anime, proving that there is genuine appetite among fans for adult dramas that prioritize quiet emotional honesty over spectacle.

A perfect rating before the show has even officially aired its full run is not just a milestone, it is a statement. The anime community has been waiting for something that feels like real life, and it seems they have found it in the most unlikely of places.
