‘Supergirl’ Faces a $100 Million Disaster After Box Office Struggles
The new DC Universe has hit its first major roadblock. After the strong start of Superman, expectations were high for Supergirl, but the latest DC Studios movie opened far below predictions and is now expected to lose a large amount of money during its theatrical run.
According to industry reports, Supergirl earned around $38 million in North America and $68 million worldwide during its opening weekend. The result was much lower than the expected $50 million domestic debut, creating concerns about whether the film can recover during the busy summer movie season.
The movie reportedly had a production budget of around $170 million, with another $120 million spent on marketing. With those costs, analysts estimate that Supergirl would need to make hundreds of millions worldwide just to break even. Some sources believe the movie could lose between $80 million and $120 million if it finishes its run with the projected box office numbers.

Supergirl follows Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, as she travels through space on a mission involving revenge, justice, and discovering her own place in the universe. The film stars Milly Alcock, known for her role in House of the Dragon, as the famous DC hero.
Box office analyst Jeff Bock from Exhibitor Relations said the biggest challenge was not only the character’s popularity but also audience interest before release.
“This was always going to be a tough hurdle for DC and Warner Bros. because Supergirl isn’t a character that has ever created an event-level blockbuster,” Bock explained. “Audience perception of ‘Supergirl’ was not good. This is just a case of the film wasn’t good enough to become an event.”
The disappointing opening comes at a difficult time for superhero movies in general. For years, comic book films were almost guaranteed successes, but audiences have become more selective. Recent movies featuring less famous characters have struggled compared to major heroes like Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man.
Shawn Robbins, director of movie analytics at Fandango and founder of Box Office Theory, said the issue is not simply superhero fatigue.
“We’ve seen so many superhero movies, but I hesitate to label it as fatigue,” Robbins said. “It’s a fatigue of seeing the same type of movies. Audiences don’t inherently want superheroes to be part of a universe. They want to see something different.”
Supergirl’s performance also raises questions about the future of the new DC Universe led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. The franchise started with Superman, which earned $618 million worldwide and was considered a successful launch for the rebooted universe.
Despite Supergirl’s struggles, DC Studios executives remain confident in their larger plans. Safran told The New York Times that the film’s performance was only one part of a much bigger strategy.
“While ‘Supergirl’ didn’t meet our box office expectations, it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in,” Safran said.
Industry experts believe superhero movies can still succeed, but studios may need to rethink budgets and focus more on characters that can attract casual moviegoers. Films centered on major heroes continue to perform well, while lesser-known characters now face a much bigger challenge.
Analysts point to movies like Joker, which became a billion-dollar hit despite having a smaller budget, as an example of a different approach. The film was made for around $55 million, showing that superhero projects do not always need massive spending to become successful.
For DC Studios, Supergirl may not destroy the future of the franchise, but it serves as a warning. As superhero audiences become harder to impress, studios will need more than familiar names and expensive productions to create the next big hit.
