Supergirl is getting a mixed reaction from audiences and critics, but early reactions suggest that fans are enjoying the new DC movie more than professional reviewers. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently holds a 58% score from critics based on 195 reviews, while the audience score is much higher at 76% from more than 500 verified ratings.

The difference between the two scores shows that viewers and critics are seeing the movie in very different ways. While some reviewers have criticized the film for feeling familiar and lacking originality, many fans have praised its action, characters, and connection to the DC universe.

Several audience members shared their thoughts on Rotten Tomatoes after watching the movie. Some viewers felt the film was a fun superhero adventure, while others believed it did not do enough to stand out from other comic book movies.

One verified viewer called it “Lots of sass and kicking ass,” showing appreciation for the movie’s energy and style. Another fan praised the overall DC experience, writing that “if you like dc comic books or any comic book movies in general you’ll love this absolute banger.”

However, not every reaction has been positive. Some viewers felt the story was too simple, with one reviewer describing it as a “pretty bland hero flick.” Others criticized certain parts of the movie, including the pacing and supporting characters. One audience member said the final battle lasted longer than necessary, while another felt the story was too similar to a basic science-fiction adventure.

The new Supergirl film stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl. The movie follows Kara as she travels through space on a dangerous mission connected to revenge. The cast also includes Jason Momoa as Lobo, along with Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and David Corenswet.

Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, Supergirl is based on the DC Comics character and takes inspiration from the comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. The film is produced by DC Studios leaders James Gunn and Peter Safran and is part of the new DC Universe storyline.

The movie represents the second major release in the new DCU after Superman (2025). Milly Alcock first appeared as Supergirl in that film before leading her own solo adventure. Production for Supergirl took place in England and Scotland, with filming running from January to May 2025.

The film premiered in Brooklyn on June 22, before its wider release from Warner Bros. Pictures on June 26. It will continue the first chapter of the DCU, titled Gods and Monsters.

While critics remain divided on Supergirl, the stronger audience score suggests that the movie may connect better with regular fans than with reviewers. The reaction also shows that many viewers are excited to see a different version of Kara Zor-El, especially one with a darker story and a more serious tone.

With the DC Universe still building its future, Supergirl’s reception could become an important sign of how audiences respond to the franchise’s new direction.
