Wouldn’t it be great to be able to travel from one place to another in mere seconds? I’m not talking about one side of your house to the other either. I’m talking about moving across the planet or even the galaxy without so much as breaking a sweat.

While this may not be possible in the real world, in the comic book world it definitely is. In fact, there are a small number of heroes capable of doing it. How do they do it, you ask? Simple. With the help of portals. Let’s take a look at our list of the five greatest superheroes that can open portals.

Blink Origin

One of the newer additions to the superheroes that can open portals list, Blink first appeared in UncannyX-Men #317 back in 1994. She was created by famed artist Joe Madureira and writer Scott Lobdell.

Without question, Blink is one of the most powerful superheroes that can open portals in Marvel. Unlike Nightcrawler who is typically fatigued after teleporting (not opening portals) long distances and/or taking others with him, Blink is able to teleport herself and groups long distances with ease. In fact, as a consequence, she played a reasonably prominent role in the 2014 movie Days of Future Past movie.

Although more obscure and lesser-known than many on this list, Blink still deserves to be here. Aside from her role in Days of Future Past, she also played an important role in arguably the best X-Men story of all time, The Age of Apocalypse.

4. Gates

Origin of Gates

Gates was the third non-humanoid creature to become a member of the Legion of Superheroes (Tellus and Quislet were the first two) and the first not to want to actually be a part of the team. He was then forced to become a member by his homeworld as a way of representing them.

Gates comes from a planet where very few inhabitants are free-thinkers. Instead, the majority follow a conformist way of thinking. Because of his non-conformity, Gates was able to develop the species’ inherent power of creating teleportation “gates” that allowed the user to jump to anywhere they could visualize. Get it? Gates? Portals?

3. Pixie

Origin of Pixie

As one of the newer superheroes that can open portals, Pixie doesn’t have a history as rich as the others on this list. This, however, doesn’t mean that she’s not worth talking about. Pixie was created by Nunzio DeFilipis, Christina Weir, and Michael Ryan. She first appeared back in 2004 in the Marvel title New X-Men: Academy X.

Pixie is a mutant. Like other mutants, she was born without any sort of power. Her powers came to the surface during her teenage years. Once they showed themselves, she learned that A) she had green wings and B) that she could throw “pixie dust” at her enemies. The dust, if it makes contact with her enemies, causes them to hallucinate. After an encounter with Magik, she also became attached to the Limbo Dimension. Through the attachment, she learned to teleport long distances and could draw out her version of the Soulsword, the Soul Dagger.

Like the Soulsword, the Souldagger is able to disrupt magical spells and beings, usually causing both to disappear. In addition, the more it is used, the more powerful it becomes.

2. Dr. Strange

Dr Strange Enemies

Dr. Stephen Strange was a surgeon who thought himself to be the best at what he did. He worked on only the most high-profile of surgeries and amassed the wealth that most dream of. With his work, however, came selfishness and egotism.

While driving his car, Stephen Strange was involved in a car accident. Although his life was saved, the car accident cost Strange the use of his hands. Now a surgeon without the use of his hands, he sought out the help of the Ancient One. Sensing his arrogance, the Ancient One told him that there’s more to life than money, luxury, and fame.

Eventually, the Ancient One did take on Strange as a student. Under his guidance, Strange became a master of the Mystic Arts and one of the most powerful characters ever created. As one of the most powerful characters ever created, opening portals comes as easy as spreading peanut butter on a piece of bread.

1. Magik

The History of Magik Illyana Rasputin

As far as X-Men goes, Magik has one of the most bizarre stories in history. She is the younger sister of Colossus and remained that way for most of her existence. Eventually, she wound up trapped in the Limbo Dimension. While there she became immensely powerful and created what’s come to be known as the Soulsword.

The Soulsword is the by-product of Magik causing her own energy to physically form in front of her. When this happens, she draws the Soulsword from it. On its own, the sword is a formidable weapon. However, if used as a weapon, it’s only doing half of what it can do. The Soulsword is able to disrupt magical spells and beings, usually causing both to disappear. And as the sword is used more and more, it becomes more powerful.

What about being one of the superheroes that can open portals, you ask? Magik has the ability to call upon “stepping discs”. These discs allowed her and others to jump from one dimension to another.

But that’s not all. What makes her the most powerful of all the superheroes that can open portals is that these discs also allow her to cross both Time and space.
