Deleted titles reportedly included the entire original ‘Matrix’ trilogy, ‘Speed,’ ‘The Lake House,’ and ‘Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure,’ effectively wiping out decades of his career from one of the world’s largest streaming markets almost overnight.

The censorship didn’t stop at simple removal, either. Searches for Reeves’ name on the platform iQiyi reportedly returned a message stating that no results could be found due to relevant laws, regulations, and policies, while his voice role in ‘Toy Story 4’ remained available but with his name notably stripped from the credited voice cast.

Reuters independently confirmed the pattern, with its own checks showing that acclaimed franchises like ‘The Matrix’ and ‘John Wick,’ along with ‘Speed,’ had all been taken down, though the exact timing of when each film disappeared couldn’t be precisely determined. China has a long-standing history of blackballing celebrities who publicly express support for Tibet or the Dalai Lama, given the country’s firm rejection of any claims to Tibetan independence.

The fallout also touched Reeves’ presence on Chinese social media, where angry comments targeting him initially circulated on Weibo before appearing to be scrubbed as well, leaving searches for his name returning largely positive results by the time reporters checked.

More than four years later, the episode remains a striking example of how quickly geopolitical sensitivities can reshape an actor’s presence in a major international market, regardless of how beloved that actor might be everywhere else. For an actor as universally admired as Reeves, the swift and total nature of the removal underscored just how little room exists for nuance when it comes to China’s stance on Tibet.
