The Bloodiest Superhero “Comeback” of the Year Drops Insane New Red-Band Trailer

After years of waiting, The Toxic Avenger is finally heading to theaters again, and it looks wilder than ever. Director Macon Blair has given the cult classic a bold new twist, and the recently released Red Band trailer proves just how crazy things are about to get.
The film is set to release on August 29, 2025, with Cineverse and Iconic Events Releasing bringing it to the big screen.
This version of The Toxic Avenger is not just a remake, it’s a full-on reimagining of the 1984 original. It tells the story of Winston Gooze, a struggling janitor who turns into a monstrous hero after a strange accident. With a mop as his weapon, he sets out to fight crime, weird villains, and shady corporations, all while trying to fix his bond with his son.
Peter Dinklage stars as Winston, with Luisa Guerreiro taking on the physical role of the mutated Toxie. The film also features Elijah Wood, Kevin Bacon, Taylour Paige, Jacob Tremblay, and Julia Davis. Jane Levy joins the cast as a voice performer.
The trailer gives a good idea of what viewers are in for, gore, dark humor, and over-the-top chaos. According to Bloody Disgusting, the movie is “Unrated” and comes packed with intense content, including “mutant nudity” and “splatter.” It’s clearly not for the faint of heart.
Despite finishing production years ago and even premiering at festivals like Fantastic Fest and Sitges, the movie had a tough time finding a distributor. Many studios reportedly didn’t want to release it because of how graphic it is. Filmmaker Adam Masnyk shared online that some believed it was “not safe to market.” At one point, people thought the movie might never be released at all.
That changed earlier this year when Cineverse picked up the rights. Soon after, Iconic Events Releasing joined in to help bring the film to theaters nationwide. It’s been a long road, but fans can finally mark their calendars.
Blair, who wrote and directed the film, made it clear that this isn’t a simple retelling of the original. He’s kept the wild, funny, and messy spirit of the Troma classic while giving it a fresh look. He also said the movie uses practical effects for the gore, sticking to an old-school style rather than relying too much on CGI.
Lloyd Kaufman, co-creator of the original film, is happy with Blair’s direction. “Macon Blair knows Troma better than I do… I’ve read the script and it’s better than the original,” Kaufman said.
Even though superhero movies are everywhere now, The Toxic Avenger is something else entirely. It’s not trying to be clean or safe, it’s proud to be strange, messy, and over-the-top. That’s exactly what longtime fans want.
