Nate Bargatze has built one of the most loyal followings in modern stand-up comedy, filling arenas on tour and racking up massive numbers with his Netflix specials. His brand of clean, observational humor has made him a rare commodity in today’s entertainment landscape: a comedian who genuinely appeals to all ages, from grandparents to grandkids. That all-audience appeal is precisely what makes his long-awaited big screen debut such a culturally interesting moment for Hollywood.

The Breadwinner‘ stars Bargatze as salesman Nate Wilcox alongside Mandy Moore as his wife, Katie, the ultimate organized mom who manages their household with efficiency and love. Things get chaotic when Katie lands a once-in-a-lifetime deal on ‘Shark Tank’ and heads off on a prolonged business trip, leaving Nate to fend for his family as a first-time stay-at-home dad. With three young daughters and little experience handling their day-to-day needs, Nate finds out quickly that running the household is the toughest gig he has ever had.

Directed by Eric Appel and co-written by Dan Lagana and Bargatze himself, the film hits theaters on May 29, courtesy of Sony Pictures, marking the major feature debut for the record-shattering stand-up comedian. Appel previously helmed the 2022 feature ‘Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.’ During a June 2025 interview with Deadline’s Comedy Means Business podcast, Bargatze said that the experience of making ‘The Breadwinner’ had been “awesome,” and also noted that he hired an acting coach for the project.

Where to Watch ‘The Breadwinner’ Right Now

As of early June, ‘The Breadwinner’ is still playing in theaters across the United States, with tickets available on AMC Theatres, Fandango, Atom Tickets, Cinepolis Cinemas, Harkins Theatres, and Marcus Theatres. There are currently no streaming options for the film. Streaming platforms for ‘The Breadwinner’ have not been announced yet.

That said, patient viewers will not have to wait forever. Because ‘The Breadwinner’ is distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing, it falls under the Sony/Netflix Pay-1 window deal struck in 2023. Historically, Sony’s live-action theatrical films land on Netflix exactly 120 days after their initial theatrical release, though more recently some have arrived as soon as 90 days after their debut, with box office performance playing a role in those earlier releases.

If ‘The Breadwinner’ follows the standard 120-day window from its May 29 premiere, the film is expected to stream on Netflix US on or around September 26, though if it drops sooner, it could land as early as late August. It is also worth noting that while Netflix and Sony announced a groundbreaking multi-year global licensing agreement, that new deal does not kick in until 2027, meaning ‘The Breadwinner’ is governed by the older, existing arrangement.

The Film Bargatze Was Born to Make

The comedian has been very open about why this specific project mattered so deeply to him. “I love that when people can go out, they can all go together,” Bargatze told podcaster Theo Von. “I want to go to stuff with my family. So, you go look at a lot of movies now, it’s like a lot of horror movies or it’s a Marvel movie or something, or it’s animated.” His vision was simple: create a space for families to watch something together, because as he put it, “everybody” is a demographic being ignored, and that was “the idea with this movie.”

Producer Jeremy Latcham shared that same enthusiasm for the project from the very beginning. “I was a part of ‘The Breadwinner’ very, very early on and I was dying to make a PG family comedy,” Latcham told the Deseret News. “Some of my favorite movies growing up were these kinds of films.”

TriStar Pictures president Nicole Brown echoed that sentiment, noting that the idea of his first film being so personal and authentic to him and his comedy felt like the perfect foray, and that Bargatze had identified a genuine gap: “he was like, ‘I want to be able to watch a film with my whole family. We can go watch animation now, but there’s nothing with real people in it.'”

A Modest but Meaningful Box Office Debut

‘The Breadwinner’ debuted to a $7.5 million opening weekend, falling short of the initial $10 million tracking figure that had been circulating in advance of its release. The film was made on a budget of approximately $25 million, meaning its theatrical run will need solid word-of-mouth support and a strong streaming performance to fully justify the investment.

Critics have been divided, with Rotten Tomatoes noting the film is as unlikely to ruffle feathers as it is to drum up big laughs, with some reviewers suggesting Bargatze’s everyman persona gets reduced to a one-note bumbling dad, while audience members have found it to be an old-fashioned good time, clichés and all. Still, Bargatze’s loyal fanbase is widely expected to carry the film when it eventually arrives on streaming.

For now, if you want to catch ‘The Breadwinner’ before it lands on Netflix, you can also purchase a digital download via Fandango At Home, or pick up a DVD or Blu-ray copy through Amazon. The streaming window is coming, and given the Sony/Netflix relationship, it is essentially guaranteed — just a matter of exactly when.
