‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Unveils a 1920s Mobster Planet Inspired by Scorsese-Style Crime Cinema
A new Star Wars movie is adding another planet to the galaxy, and it feels very different from the usual locations fans know.
The planet is called Shakari and it will appear in The Mandalorian and Grogu. According to production designer Andrew L. Jones, the idea for the planet comes from Prohibition-era Chicago. He described it as a crime-heavy city world where it is always raining and the sun never comes out.
The team behind the movie also wanted the planet to have its own unique feel in terms of weapons. They designed a new type of blaster that takes inspiration from the Tommy gun style used in the 1920s. The goal was to mix something familiar with something clearly from the Star Wars universe.
There are also some strange details about who lives on Shakari. The planet is said to be the home of a character linked to Martin Scorsese. This character is not named yet, but he is described as an Ardennian, which is the same species as Rio Durant from Solo: A Star Wars Story. Jon Favreau, who directed The Mandalorian and Grogu and also voiced Rio, shared this information in an interview with Fandango.
“Shakari was inspired by Prohibition-era Chicago,” Andrew L. Jones said at a press preview event attended by Polygon.
There are not many plot details about what happens on Shakari. But the way the planet has been described suggests it will be an important setting in the film. There is even a chance it could be the location of a major action scene, possibly the car chase inspired by The French Connection that Jon Favreau has talked about before.
