The 2018 film Euphoria, directed by Swedish filmmaker Lisa Langseth, has unexpectedly climbed to the top of HBO Max’s most-watched list, despite originally receiving poor reviews and going largely unnoticed at the time of its release.

The sudden rise in popularity has surprised viewers and critics alike, raising questions about how and why the film is suddenly trending again.

The situation has sparked debate over whether this spike in viewership reflects a renewed interest in the film or is simply the result of a coincidence within the streaming platform’s recommendation system.

The film follows two estranged sisters, Emilie, played by Eva Green, and Ines, played by Alicia Vikander. The story begins when Emilie invites Ines on a trip to a remote and mysterious luxury resort in Europe. Once there, Ines discovers that the location is actually a high-end euthanasia center. Emilie, who is suffering from terminal cancer, has chosen to end her life there.

While the two lead actresses were praised for their performances and on-screen chemistry, critics were largely unimpressed with the film overall. Many reviews at the time argued that the movie avoided deeper ethical and philosophical questions about assisted suicide. Instead, it focused more on a familiar family drama structure, with the sisters confronting old conflicts and unresolved emotional trauma.

The film currently holds a 19 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, while audience ratings are only slightly higher at around 34 percent.

The film has spent several days at the top of the streaming charts, briefly dropping to second place in the UK before returning to number one again. This consistent performance has made its sudden popularity even more noticeable, especially given its earlier critical reception.

One of the most widely discussed explanations for the surge in viewership is a possible case of mistaken identity. HBO Max also hosts the popular HBO series Euphoria, starring Zendaya, which has a very large global audience. The timing of the film’s rise appears to coincide with major activity surrounding the television series, including renewed interest in its latest season finale.

Many viewers may have gone to HBO Max searching for the Zendaya-led series and accidentally clicked on or selected the 2018 film instead. Because both the film and the series share the exact same title and appear on the same streaming platform, confusion is very likely.

This theory is supported by timing. The film’s rise in popularity closely matches the period when the Euphoria series finale was being widely discussed and streamed. With viewers actively searching for the show, it is possible that the algorithm also boosted the film’s visibility on the platform’s homepage and trending lists.

If true, this would mean the film’s unexpected success is less about renewed appreciation and more about how streaming algorithms and similar titles can influence viewing habits. Whether intentional or accidental, Euphoria has now found itself back in the spotlight years after its initial release, proving how unpredictable streaming trends can be.
