The ‘Yellowstone’ universe has officially planted its boots on South Texas soil, and the new ‘Dutton Ranch‘ spinoff wasted no time reminding fans that wherever Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler go, law enforcement is never really on their side. The series serves as both a spinoff and sequel to ‘Yellowstone’ and is the fifth television series in the Yellowstone franchise, premiering on Paramount+ on May 15, 2026. With nine episodes in its first season, the show is moving fast, and it is already seeding some deeply complicated dynamics with the local legal authority.

The two-part premiere, consisting of “The Untold Want” and “Earn Another Day,” officially relocates television’s most toxic power couple to the Lone Star State, with Beth still delivering venomous lines with total precision and Rip bringing his familiar quiet menace. But one character quietly introduced in those opening episodes is already drawing serious fan attention, and his name is Sheriff Wade.

Josh Stewart Steps Into the Role of Sheriff Wade

The full cast includes Jessica Belkin as Cassie and Josh Stewart as Sheriff Wade, expanding the social and legal landscape of the Texas setting considerably. Stewart is a familiar face to genre audiences, and his casting here feels deliberately calibrated to keep fans guessing about which side of the law his character actually serves.

Josh Stewart appears as Sheriff Wade, and several other actors also appear during the premiere, with the large cast helping make Texas feel like a completely new world for the ‘Yellowstone’ universe. His character steps into the story during one of its most charged early moments, and the impression he leaves is anything but straightforward.

Carter attends a local rodeo where he sees a cowboy getting rough with a girl, intervenes, and beats the guy senseless, but he is arrested. Thankfully, this is Texas, so beating someone up is a small affair, and Sheriff Wade seems pretty relaxed about the whole thing. That studied calm, however, may be hiding something far less relaxed beneath the surface.

Oreana tells Carter that she knew the sheriff pretty well, so he did her a favor in getting him released. The fact that Wade operates on personal favors rather than formal procedure is the first real clue that his jurisdiction in Rio Paloma operates by its own unwritten rules.

Sheriff Wade and the 10 Petal Ranch Rival

Rip quickly secures a legacy property from an aging rancher named Jeanie, who wants to sell to genuine cowboys rather than massive corporations, and Rip immediately renames it Dutton Ranch, but local peace is a total illusion as they face the neighboring ranch ruled by matriarch Beulah Jackson. Beulah, played with coiled menace by Annette Bening, controls the cattle market in the region like a personal fiefdom, and the question the show is already raising is how deeply Sheriff Wade is tangled in that web.

Rip Wheeler Survived ‘Yellowstone’ — But Is ‘Dutton Ranch’ Setting Him Up to Die?

Wes’s widow Whitney arrives at the sheriff’s office to file a missing person’s report, and she talks Sheriff Handy Wade into taking a report, while he warns her that suggesting someone at the 10 Petal of knowing what happened is a serious accusation. That warning lands less like professional caution and more like a carefully delivered threat wrapped in a badge.

The fact that the sheriff is in the pocket of Beulah Jackson means the missing person’s report made by Wes’s wife will likely fall on deaf ears. For Beth and Rip, who spent years navigating a corrupt sheriff in Montana, the realization that Rio Paloma comes with its own compromised law enforcement sets up a collision course that feels both familiar and freshly dangerous.

Beth and Rip’s Texas Ranch Faces a New Kind of Enemy

Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton gamble everything on a new life in South Texas, but the promise of building a future far from the ghosts of ‘Yellowstone’ quickly collides with brutal new realities and a rival ranch that will stop at nothing to protect its empire. Having an ally-less lawman operating in Beulah’s shadow makes that empire significantly harder to crack from the outside.

Annette Bening joins the franchise as Beulah Jackson, the powerful, charming, and cunning head of a major rival ranch in Texas, bringing a different kind of antagonist to the ‘Yellowstone’ universe: polished, calculated, and completely unsentimental. A sheriff operating in service of someone like that gives Beulah an institutional advantage that pure muscle and cattle deals cannot easily overcome.

At its core, the show is a family fighting for a future, and while Beth and Rip’s love story is the show’s backbone, it is rich with new narrative opportunities that could make the franchise more expansive. Sheriff Wade sits squarely at the intersection of all those opportunities, representing a legal wall that Beth’s particular brand of brilliance will eventually have to find a way around.

What Sheriff Wade Means for the ‘Dutton Ranch’ Season Ahead

Prior to the series premiere, creator Chad Feehan departed the project due to clashes between him, cast members, Taylor Sheridan, and the head of 101 Studios David Glasser, though he will continue to be credited as the series’ creator. Whatever turbulence happened behind the scenes, the storytelling machinery on screen is already running smoothly, and Sheriff Wade is a significant piece of that machinery.

Production of the series began in August 2025, taking place in Ferris, Texas, with Greg Yaitanes, Jessica Lowrey, Phil Abraham, and Christina Alexandra Voros serving as directors. The real-world shoot gave the series an authentically grounded visual texture, which makes a character like Sheriff Wade feel embedded in a community rather than parachuted in as a plot device.

Dutton Ranch is not just a ‘Yellowstone’ sequel but a reboot for Beth and Rip, an entirely new series with a new direction and a fresh, bold vibe. If Sheriff Wade continues down the path the premiere has laid for him, he may end up being the most layered obstacle the Duttons have faced since the Montana years, operating in plain sight with a badge that makes him almost untouchable.

Whether Sheriff Wade ultimately becomes a genuine threat, a reluctant ally, or something far more complicated is the question ‘Dutton Ranch’ is daring viewers to keep showing up for, so drop your theory in the comments about which direction Josh Stewart’s lawman is heading before this season reaches its finale.
