Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ Just Got a Major Filming Update After 5-Week Break!
Marvel Studios has spent much of 2026 juggling two massive productions at once, working to wrap ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ while simultaneously ramping up its highly anticipated follow-up. That balancing act has kept fans closely tracking every scrap of production news trickling out of Pinewood Studios in England.
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo have been candid about just how demanding that overlap has been. Speaking with Collider following Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con panel, Anthony Russo described the current period as a whirlwind of finishing touches on ‘Doomsday’ while simultaneously prepping their next Avengers installment behind the scenes, calling it “a complicated time in our lives, but thrilling.”
That prep work has now translated into actual cameras rolling. According to a new report from Filmbase, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars‘ has officially begun production in the United Kingdom, though the shoot is already on a planned five-week hiatus, with filming set to resume toward the end of September.
That kind of early break isn’t unusual for a production of this scale, especially given how ‘Doomsday’ itself was structured. That film shot from April through September 2025, with additional reshoots taking place earlier this year, suggesting ‘Secret Wars’ may be following a similarly staggered production schedule as the Russos continue splitting their attention between both films.
Plot details for ‘Secret Wars’ remain tightly guarded, though speculation has continued building around how directly the film will connect to ‘Doomsday’s’ ending. Industry insider Alex Perez of The Cosmic Circus has claimed that, aside from a small handful of surviving heroes and villains, most of the MCU’s characters will be under Doctor Doom’s control by the time ‘Secret Wars’ begins, describing the premise as resembling “WandaVision meets ‘What If…? The Avengers Assembled in 1602.'”
While that specific plot framing remains unconfirmed, the film’s cast list already reads like one of the most expansive rosters in franchise history. Reported names include Robert Downey Jr. reprising his role as Doctor Doom, alongside Paul Rudd, Simu Liu, Tom Hiddleston, Lewis Pullman, Florence Pugh, Danny Ramirez, Ian McKellen, Sebastian Stan, Winston Duke, Chris Hemsworth, Kelsey Grammer, James Marsden, and Channing Tatum.
The ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’ cast is also expected to carry over directly into the film, with Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach reprising their roles as Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm. Moss-Bachrach previously confirmed his own filming timeline earlier this year, explaining that a Broadway commitment running through mid-July was deliberately scheduled to wrap before his ‘Secret Wars’ work began.
Given how tightly the production calendar has shifted throughout the year, some fans have speculated that ‘Secret Wars’ could ultimately see its December 17, 2027 release date pushed back, especially if the film’s shooting schedule mirrors ‘Doomsday’s’ extended five-month timeline. For now, though, Marvel has given no indication that the date is changing, and the confirmation of actual filming underway suggests the studio remains on track.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is still set to hit theaters first, on December 18, marking the culmination of Marvel’s current Multiverse Saga before ‘Secret Wars’ closes it out the following year. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has previously described the two films together as less of a full reboot and more of a reset, explaining that the story would tie up threads left dangling since ‘Avengers: Endgame’ while setting the stage for the franchise’s next chapter.
With cameras officially rolling and a five-week break now underway before production resumes, fans have a clearer sense of where ‘Secret Wars’ currently stands, even as most plot specifics remain firmly under wraps. Given how sprawling the cast list has already become, the film appears poised to deliver Marvel’s largest ensemble effort since ‘Avengers: Endgame’ itself.
