Every good spy thriller eventually has to decide how it wants to end, and few streaming hits have gone from a humble White House phone line to a globe-trotting action franchise as quickly as ‘The Night Agent‘. The Netflix series built its reputation on propulsive plotting and a hero who never stopped running. Now the road is finally reaching its last stop.
The show has had an unusual journey. Based on the novel by Matthew Quirk, it debuted in 2023 and became one of Netflix’s breakout hits, with its first season landing in the global top 10 English-language TV chart for 17 weeks and ranking as the platform’s most-watched show for the first half of that year. Viewership then cooled, with the second season ranking ninth in the first half of 2025 and the third entering the top 10 for just 4 weeks earlier this year.
That brings us to the latest update. On September 30, Netflix announced that ‘The Night Agent’ has wrapped production on its fourth and final season, sharing a 42-second behind-the-scenes video that promises new friends, new foes, and new threats for Peter Sutherland. The season is slated to arrive on the streamer in 2027.
The teaser leans heavily into action. It shows Gabriel Basso back on set as Peter, with intricate set pieces that include a plane being slowly exploded. No exact release date has been confirmed yet.

The show’s ending was not announced in a single stroke. Netflix renewed the series for a fourth season in March, then revealed on May 4 that it would be the last, just as production began in Los Angeles. That move marked the first time the show filmed on the West Coast, after earlier seasons were based in New York.
Netflix and Sony Pictures Television framed the ending as a planned, definitive conclusion rather than a cancellation. Creator and showrunner Shawn Ryan has said he wants to deliver a conclusion worthy of the show’s fanbase. One outlet argues that declining viewership across each season helped drive the decision to close the story.
The wrap didn’t come as a total surprise. Cast member Annabeth Gish revealed in a TikTok video on September 21 that she had finished her work on the season, while reports had suggested that filming would run through September.
Basso leads the way as Peter Sutherland, a former low-level FBI agent who has taken on increasingly dangerous assignments with the bureau’s counterintelligence unit, Night Action. The third season ended with his boss, FBI Deputy Director Mosley, telling him he’d be getting a partner, which sets the stage for what comes next.
The new cast reflects that setup. Titus Welliver is reportedly playing Duval, a special DOJ prosecutor, while Trevante Rhodes is believed to be playing Dom, Peter’s new partner, and Li Jun Li is thought to be playing Dom’s wife, Min. Elizabeth Lail joins as Zoe, Peter’s ex-fiancée, while Abigail Breslin plays Cahlin, a young FBI agent investigating Night Action, David Denman plays Ford, a veteran CIA agent, and Gish plays Holland, another FBI agent investigating Peter.
Fans have been asking one question louder than the rest. Luciane Buchanan is reportedly set to return as the fan-favorite Rose Larkin, whose absence from the third season became the most controversial talking point of the show’s 2026 return. Netflix has not officially confirmed her return, so viewers will need to wait and see how the finale handles her story.
That uncertainty is part of the appeal. With the story ending, one outlet suggests viewers should expect more familiar faces to return than usual, possibly even in flashbacks.
Netflix has only committed to 2027, though one outlet expects the season to land in the first quarter, possibly in January or February. That is speculation rather than a confirmed date, and Netflix could still reveal something different.
The show also carries a solid critical standing. It holds 82% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes across all 3 seasons, though audiences are less enthusiastic at 67% on the Popcornmeter. Whether the final season can close on a high note remains to be seen.
