‘The Odyssey’ Destroys Major 2026 Hits in Its Opening Weekend
Summer 2026 has been a rollercoaster at the box office, swinging between disappointing bombs and the occasional surprise hit long before Christopher Nolan’s latest epic ever made it to theaters. Big-budget releases from major studios and beloved franchises alike have struggled to connect with audiences in recent months, leaving plenty of room for one film to completely reset expectations. That film turned out to be ‘The Odyssey.’
Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic, led by Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, and Robert Pattinson, arrived with an enormous amount riding on its opening weekend.
As the first Hollywood feature ever shot entirely with IMAX cameras, the film needed to prove that an original, R-rated adaptation could still command the kind of audience turnout usually reserved for established franchises.
It did far more than that. ‘The Odyssey’ opened to a staggering 264.1 million dollars worldwide, a single weekend total that has already surpassed the entire theatrical runs of several other 2026 releases combined into one film’s opening frame. That kind of comparison puts just how dominant this debut really was into sharp perspective.
Steven Spielberg’s original sci-fi thriller ‘Disclosure Day’ is one of the films left in the dust. Despite marking the director’s best ever opening weekend for an original movie, the alien conspiracy thriller has settled in around 229 million dollars worldwide after more than a month in theaters, a total that ‘The Odyssey’ cleared in a single weekend.
Disney’s live-action remake of ‘Moana‘ tells a similar story. After a disappointing debut that fell well short of expectations, the film had climbed to roughly 115 million dollars worldwide during its first week in release, a fraction of what Nolan’s epic pulled in over its opening three days alone.
The comparisons only get more lopsided from there. Amazon MGM’s long-awaited ‘Masters of the Universe‘ reboot, carrying a reported production budget north of 170 million dollars, has settled around 113 million dollars worldwide after weeks in theaters, making it one of the most notable box office disappointments of the year.
Warner Bros’ ‘Supergirl‘ fared similarly, landing around 115 million dollars worldwide after a short and underwhelming run that saw it fall out of the box office top ten faster than almost any other film in the character’s history.
Taken together, all four of those films combined still land short of what ‘The Odyssey’ managed to pull in over a single opening weekend. That level of dominance underscores just how much of an outlier Nolan has become in an industry increasingly struggling to get audiences back into theaters for anything that is not a proven franchise or family-friendly tentpole.
Much of that success has been credited to the film’s insistence on being seen the way Nolan intended. Premium formats, including standard IMAX and the rarer IMAX 70mm presentation, accounted for a massive share of the film’s ticket sales, with fans lining up for early morning and late night screenings just to experience the format properly. That kind of format-specific demand simply has not existed for most of this summer’s other major releases.
With critics and audiences both responding enthusiastically, and no major new competition arriving until Marvel’s next Spider-Man installment at the end of the month, ‘The Odyssey’ looks poised to keep climbing well past its opening numbers. For a summer that has otherwise been defined by underwhelming debuts and costly misfires, Nolan’s epic has emerged as the one release capable of resetting the conversation entirely.
