‘The Odyssey’ Reviews Keep Coming, and They All Say the Exact Same Thing

Christopher Nolan has never exactly shied away from ambition, and his latest project might be the biggest swing of his career. After years of secrecy, sold-out IMAX showings before the trailer even dropped, and a marketing campaign built almost entirely on mystery, audiences are finally getting their first real glimpse of what all the fuss has been about.

That mystery reached a boiling point once the social media embargo lifted following the film’s London premiere earlier this month.

Critics, journalists, and industry insiders who attended early screenings wasted no time sharing their reactions, and fans have been flooding timelines with praise ever since, much like the glowing tribute currently circulating online calling the film a masterpiece powered by Ludwig Göransson’s score and Nolan’s signature scale.

That enthusiasm is not just fan hype. The wave of first reactions to ‘The Odyssey‘ has turned out to be overwhelmingly, almost unanimously, positive, with critics reaching for words like staggering, monumental, and flawless to describe Nolan’s take on Homer’s epic. Variety’s Jazz Tangcay called the film an astonishing achievement and a triumphant, spectacular epic in her review for Variety, singling out the ensemble cast as some of the best work of their careers.

That kind of praise has been echoed across nearly every major outlet that has weighed in so far. Collider’s Peri Nemiroff described the movie as a filmmaking feast that feels uniquely Nolan, while Discussing Film called it a staggering achievement and IndieWire pointed to a strong final act despite some early clunkiness.

ScreenRant went even further, calling it the most must-see theatrical experience of a generation and a new gold standard for blockbuster filmmaking.

Performances have been a major talking point across the board. Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland have all drawn early awards buzz, with several critics floating Damon as a legitimate Best Actor contender and Hathaway as a lock for a supporting nomination. Samantha Morton has also emerged as an unexpected standout, with more than one critic pointing to her sequence in the film as one of the best moments Nolan has ever directed.

The technical achievement of the film has drawn just as much attention as the performances. ‘The Odyssey’ was shot entirely using new IMAX film cameras across locations including Greece, Italy, Morocco, Iceland and Scotland, and critics have repeatedly emphasized just how immersive that scale feels on the big screen. Comparisons to sweeping epics like ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ have already started popping up in early coverage.

It has not been entirely free of turbulence on the road to release. The film became the subject of online backlash before anyone outside of press screenings had actually seen it, fueled by casting speculation and complaints about historical accuracy in the costuming and production design.

Much of that controversy has since cooled as actual reactions from people who watched the film began rolling in overwhelmingly positive.

Not every reaction has been a flawless rave, which has actually helped the film’s credibility with skeptical audiences. A handful of critics noted some pacing issues or moments that felt slightly overstuffed given the film’s three-hour runtime, but even those more measured takes still landed on the side of recommending the theatrical experience wholeheartedly.

With ‘The Odyssey’ now just days away from its wide release, the response so far suggests Nolan may have delivered one of his most acclaimed films yet, right alongside ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Inception’ in fan conversations.
