‘The Odyssey’ Runtime Finally Revealed — Here’s How Long the Epic Will Be
Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey now has a reported runtime, and it fits right into the director’s reputation for making long, large-scale films.
According to AMC listings, The Odyssey is currently shown with a runtime of 2 hours and 40 minutes. That places it under the length of Nolan’s previous film Oppenheimer, which ran for about three hours.
Nolan has already addressed the film’s length in earlier comments during an interview with The Associated Press. He explained that while the movie is designed as an epic, it will not be as long as some fans might expect. He said, “It’s an epic film, as the subject matter demands. But it is shorter.”
Producer Emma Thomas also previously suggested that the film would finish its story in under three hours, matching the idea that Nolan wanted a tighter structure compared to his recent releases.
Nolan also spoke about the pressure of adapting such a well-known story. He said, “There’s a massive amount of pressure.” He added, “Anyone taking on The Odyssey is taking on the hopes and dreams of people for epic movies everywhere, and that comes with a huge responsibility.”
The Odyssey is based on Homer’s ancient Greek poem and follows the journey of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, as he tries to return home after the Trojan War. Along the way, he faces mythological dangers like the Cyclops, sirens, and the nymph Calypso while trying to reunite with his wife Penelope.
The film is directed by Christopher Nolan and stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. It is produced by Nolan and Emma Thomas through Syncopy and is being made with a reported budget of around $250 million.
Production on the film took place across multiple countries including Greece, Italy, Morocco, Scotland, Iceland, and Malta, as well as studio work in Los Angeles. It is also Nolan’s first film shot entirely using IMAX 70mm cameras, making it one of his most technically ambitious projects to date.
The Odyssey is scheduled to be released in U.S. theaters on July 17, with IMAX screenings planned worldwide.
