The first clip from The Punisher: One Last Kill has arrived, giving fans an early look at the upcoming Marvel Television Special Presentation before it streams tonight on Disney+. The project is part of Marvel’s mature-audience lineup and brings Jon Bernthal back as Frank Castle in a darker, more personal chapter of the character’s story.

According to Marvel Television and details shared alongside the release, the special will premiere on May 12 at 6 p.m. PT exclusively on Disney+. It follows Frank Castle after his long-running war of revenge, with the story picking up at a point where he no longer sees a clear purpose for continuing his violent mission.

In the new clip and official description, Frank is shown as deeply broken and exhausted. He believes he has already completed his revenge for the murder of his wife and children, and is now left searching for meaning in a life that feels empty. That changes when Ma Gnucci, played by Judith Light, arrives seeking her own revenge and pulls him back into conflict.

Jon Bernthal, who also serves as executive producer, helped develop the story with director Reinaldo Marcus Green. Green explained how the project came together and how personal the approach to the character became during development.

“It was amazing to have the character himself say, ‘I want you to do this.’ There is no greater compliment as a filmmaker,” Green said when describing Bernthal’s involvement in bringing him onto the project.

Green also shared how his early connection to the character influenced his approach. He recalled rediscovering old Punisher comics from his childhood while preparing for the project.

“Of all the comic books, from Fantastic Four to X-Men, The Punisher was at the top of the pile,” he said.

The director explained that the special is built around Frank Castle’s emotional state rather than nonstop action. While violence is still a major part of the story, it is used more sparingly at first to show Frank’s mental decline before things escalate.

“This is probably the darkest state that we’ve ever seen Frank Castle in,” Green said. “We hold back for a long time before the action comes. Once we literally set him ablaze, it’s full-on action.”

The special also brings back familiar characters like Karen Page and Curtis Hoyle, helping to ground Frank’s journey in his past relationships and trauma. According to Green, Frank’s perspective is unstable, and part of the story plays with what is real versus what is shaped by his mind.

The project is designed as a standalone story within the Marvel universe, but it still carries emotional weight tied to Frank’s history in previous appearances, including Daredevil: Born Again. The filmmakers describe it as more of a cinematic one-off than a traditional series installment.

Bernthal’s portrayal remains central to the tone of the special, with Green praising his commitment to the role and the physical demands involved.

“There’s no greater trooper. Someone who is going to set himself on fire for the fans is someone who is committed to the craft,” Green said.

With its darker tone, emotional focus, and limited special format, The Punisher: One Last Kill looks set to explore Frank Castle at his lowest point before pushing him back into violence once again when it streams on Disney+ tonight.
