‘The Social Reckoning’ Star Wunmi Mosaku (40) Strikes Gold at the Academy Museum Gala in a Sequin Gown With a Thigh-High Slit
Few stars have had a year like Wunmi Mosaku’s. The ‘Sinners’ actress spent the 2026 awards season collecting nominations and trophies, and she did it in some of the boldest, brightest gowns on the circuit. Her stylist has said she loves color, and her wardrobe has covered everything from cobalt blue to sunshine yellow.
So when the sixth annual Academy Museum Gala arrived on October 17 in Los Angeles, it was another chance to see her in full red carpet mode. The event honored Charlize Theron, Colman Domingo and John Carpenter, with Taylor Swift set to perform, and is often called the “Met Gala of the West.”
For this appearance, Wunmi Mosaku’s Academy Museum Gala look leaned into metallic gold. She wore a shimmering gown covered in gold sequins, with a scalloped sweetheart neckline, thin straps and a long skirt that opens into a high thigh-high slit.

In the carpet photo, she poses with one hand on her hip and the other resting at her thigh, her short hair neatly styled. The gown’s sequins are arranged in long, rectangular plaques that catch the light in streaks, and the hem breaks into a fringed finish that moves as she walks. Black pointed pumps keep the focus on the gown.
Gold suits her. W Magazine’s roundup of her best red carpet moments describes her wardrobe as a mix of sculptural silhouettes in punchy pink, molten gold gowns and rich emerald looks. This one fits squarely in the middle of that range.

Gold also has a personal resonance for her this year. When she announced her second pregnancy on the 2026 Golden Globes red carpet in a custom yellow Matthew Reisman gown, she explained in a personal essay for Vogue that the color symbolized the Yoruba phrase “Iya ni Wúrà,” which means “mother is golden.”
That story gives her bright-color choices more depth. Instead of just chasing trends, she has used color to tell a story, and a gold gown at a film gala feels like a continuation of that theme.

The fashion has gone hand in hand with a major awards run. Mosaku earned her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for playing Annie in Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners,’ which led the field with a record 16 nominations. She did not win on the night, with the prize going to Amy Madigan for ‘Weapons,’ but she had already taken home the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress.
She also won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture at the 57th NAACP Image Awards, where ‘Sinners’ collected 13 wins from 18 nominations. At the BAFTAs, she wore an electric-blue fringed Ahluwalia dress.

Her Oscar night look was a deep emerald green Louis Vuitton gown by Nicolas Ghesquière, hand-embroidered with hundreds of tiny beads, with David Yurman jewelry. She then switched into a custom purple Georges Chakra gown for the Vanity Fair Oscar Party.
Earlier in the season, she also wore a butter-yellow pleated Aquamaia dress to the Film Independent Spirit Awards and a printed Ahluwalia turtleneck gown during awards week. Her stylist Shameelah Hicks has been by her side throughout, helping shape the looks.
Mosaku shared the Academy Museum Gala carpet with an enormous guest list. Taylor Swift, Kate Hudson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kerry Washington, Eiza González and Chase Infiniti were among the attendees, along with Emmy Rossum, Amandla Stenberg and Maya Hawke.
In a field that included plenty of statement gowns, her gold sequins stood out for their warmth. The look reads as celebratory, which fits the tone she has carried all year.
The gown does a lot with a simple idea. The neckline is soft, the fabric is bold, and the slit adds movement without overwhelming the design. Paired with minimal accessories, it lets the metallic texture speak for itself.
It also feels like a victory lap after a historic season. For an actress who says she felt embraced by fashion for the first time this year, a golden gala look is a fitting way to keep the glow going.
