‘The Walking Dead’ Boss Confirms More Series Coming, but There’s a Catch

The Walking Dead franchise has spent years defying expectations about how long a single zombie universe can keep expanding. What began as one flagship series back in 2010 has since splintered into a sprawling collection of spinoffs spanning multiple continents, and its chief architect shows no signs of slowing that ambition down.

Scott M. Gimple, who has overseen the franchise’s creative direction since stepping into the role of chief content officer, has spent recent years openly discussing just how far he believes the universe can still stretch. Between series like ‘Daryl Dixon,’ ‘Dead City,’ and ‘The Ones Who Live,’ the franchise has continued proving there’s still substantial audience appetite for new stories set within its zombie-ravaged world.

That appetite is showing no signs of fading, according to Gimple’s latest comments. Speaking with The Direct, Gimple confirmed that more Walking Dead series are officially on the way, though fans should brace for a noticeably slower release cadence compared to the franchise’s earlier, more rapid expansion phase.

“There’s definitely going to be more series, both shorter things and ongoing things. The rollout will be slightly slower. But more, definitely more. There are cool things in the works. I had a lot of conversations, even this week, about that,” Gimple told The Direct in an exclusive interview.

That slower pace appears to reflect broader shifts in how television gets made and consumed rather than any diminished ambition on Gimple’s part. He’s previously acknowledged that the franchise can “only put out so many Walking Dead hours a year,” even as demand for new content within the universe remains high among longtime fans.

Gimple has been notably candid in past interviews about balancing quality against volume, describing his role as managing a complex juggling act across multiple simultaneous productions rather than simply greenlighting projects for the sake of maintaining a constant release schedule. That approach has already shaped decisions across the franchise, including plans for shows with varying episode counts and formats rather than sticking rigidly to the sixteen-episode seasons that defined the flagship series.

Despite the deliberate slowdown, Gimple has continued expressing genuine enthusiasm about where the universe could still go. He’s spoken previously about wanting to expand the franchise’s geographic footprint even further, following spinoffs like ‘Daryl Dixon’ taking the story to France and eventually Spain, suggesting new international settings remain firmly on the table.

Gimple has repeatedly framed the franchise’s longevity in near-limitless terms, previously telling interviewers he believes ‘The Walking Dead’ could realistically continue through 2040 and beyond. He’s pointed to comic creator Robert Kirkman’s original vision for the project, describing it as conceived from the start as “the zombie movie that never ends.”

That philosophy has already translated into tangible results. Since the flagship series concluded its eleven-season run in 2022, the franchise has continued producing new spinoffs at a steady pace, with ‘Dead City’ and ‘Daryl Dixon’ both continuing into additional seasons while other concepts remain in various stages of development behind the scenes.

Given how consistently Gimple has reiterated his commitment to keeping the universe alive, even while acknowledging a more measured release schedule ahead, fans shouldn’t expect the franchise to disappear from screens anytime soon. Whether that slower rollout ultimately means higher-quality installments or simply longer waits between projects remains to be seen as these new series move from development into production.
