New York City has never been kind to the people trying to survive within it, and that reputation holds firm as ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ returns for a new chapter. The AMC spinoff has spent two seasons watching Maggie Rhee and Negan claw their way through a broken Manhattan, and their relationship has been just as bruised as the city around them.

Season 2 ended on a fractured note, with the pair barely speaking after Maggie stabbed Negan and the New Babylon Federation seized control of the city’s methane facility. That kind of betrayal does not just disappear, and viewers went into the premiere wondering how the show would walk back years of animosity between its two leads.

As it turns out, the season 3 opener titled ‘Trillium’ wastes little time answering that question, along with a much bigger one that had been looming since last season. The episode confirms the fate of the Croat, the ruthless figure who once ruled the city with an iron grip, closing out that chapter for good.

The episode opens with Negan finding Maggie digging a grave for Ginny, and the two immediately fall back into old patterns of blame and guilt. Maggie apologizes for her role in Ginny’s death, telling Negan she cannot undo what happened, and the two are forced to sit with the wreckage of their choices before anything resembling trust can return.

That reckoning gets interrupted quickly. Two siblings named Luis and Renata find Maggie and Negan, initially hoping to use them as leverage with a mysterious faction that has plastered the city with wanted posters. Before that plan can play out, Maggie’s son Hershel appears and a bomb detonates nearby, sending Negan and Maggie scrambling for cover in a nearby basement.

From there, the group crosses paths with the Croat, who is discovered badly wounded after destroying his own stockpile of tanks rather than let anyone else claim them. His one condition for helping the group is that he gets to see his life’s work one final time before he dies. That request sets up the episode’s most significant moment, as Negan ultimately becomes the one to put the Croat out of his misery on the embassy steps, ending the character’s arc after two seasons of tension with Negan.

‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ also uses the premiere to address Hershel’s rocky arc from last season. After siding with the enigmatic Dama in season 2, Hershel appears ready to shift course, showing renewed interest in medicine and a willingness to help save a pregnant woman and her baby alongside Luis and Renata. It is a small but meaningful step back toward his mother, even if their relationship still has a long way to go.

By the episode’s end, Maggie and Negan have moved from bitter rivals to something resembling working partners, even sharing a rare smile once their immediate crisis passes. Maggie chooses to stay on with Renata and Luis at their hospital fortress, hoping for a fresh start with Hershel, while Negan retreats to a bar for some much-needed quiet. That peace does not last long, though, since the episode closes with a reminder that the Dama is still very much out there and actively hunting them.

Critics have largely praised the premiere as a reset that clears out lingering baggage from the first two seasons, particularly around Hershel’s storyline, even as some reviewers noted the episode feels more like a transitional bridge than a bold new beginning. With the Croat gone and the Dama looming as the season’s central threat, ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ has set itself up for a very different kind of conflict moving forward.
