‘The Walking Dead’ Star Jeffrey Dean Morgan Was Once Physically Attacked by an 80-Year-Old Fan over Negan

Jeffrey Dean Morgan has spent nearly a decade living inside the skin of one of television’s most polarizing characters, and even after all these years, the line between actor and villain hasn’t fully blurred for everyone watching. Negan’s introduction on ‘The Walking Dead’ remains one of the most brutal and controversial moments in the franchise’s history, and apparently, the fallout hasn’t entirely faded.

Morgan debuted as Negan back in 2016, and the character’s earliest actions on the show, particularly the violent deaths of two beloved cast members, left a mark on fans that clearly hasn’t faded in the years since. Even now, nearly a decade later, Morgan says he still encounters people who haven’t quite separated him from the character he plays.

During a recent appearance on Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Morgan opened up about just how far that lingering hostility has gone. When Horowitz expressed hope that fans understood the difference between Morgan and Negan, the actor didn’t hesitate to correct him, saying he still gets hate regularly from people furious over Negan’s actions.

Morgan explained the reaction still surprises him given how long ago the storyline aired, pointing out that Glenn’s death had actually already happened in the source comics years earlier. He described the intensity of fan anger as something that genuinely shocked him at the time, recalling on the podcast how deeply invested audiences had become in Glenn’s character before his death aired on screen.

That lingering resentment reached its most extreme point during an encounter Morgan described taking place in Georgia. He and co-star Norman Reedus, who plays Daryl Dixon, would frequently ride motorcycles together and stop at various local spots, and one particular coffee shop visit turned into something far more confrontational than either actor expected.

Morgan recounted that an elderly woman, whom he estimated to be around 80 years old, approached the pair alongside her granddaughter. While the granddaughter was thrilled to meet both actors, the grandmother reacted very differently once she recognized Morgan, physically smacking him with her purse while shouting expletives at him.

The moment escalated quickly enough that Reedus reportedly urged Morgan to leave immediately, sensing the situation had become genuinely serious rather than just an awkward fan interaction. Morgan described the exchange as intense enough that it stood out even among years of similar encounters with unhappy fans.

Despite the character’s redemption arc over subsequent seasons, where Negan eventually saves Judith Grimes, kills the Whisperer leader Alpha, and helps protect the surviving communities, Morgan says the hostility hasn’t fully disappeared. He noted that even walking down the street in New York today, someone occasionally still yells at him or reacts negatively purely because of Negan’s early actions on the show.

That kind of extended fan reaction speaks to just how effectively Morgan’s performance landed with audiences from the very beginning, even if the response wasn’t always positive in the moment. Negan’s transformation from villain to reluctant antihero across later seasons has clearly done little to fully erase the initial impact of those early, brutal episodes.

With Morgan continuing to play the character in spinoff series ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City,’ it seems audiences still haven’t entirely made peace with what Negan did all those years ago. Whatever the character’s arc looks like going forward, Morgan’s real-life encounters suggest Negan’s legacy remains as complicated for fans as it is for the character himself.
