‘The Walking Dead’s’ New Plan For Maggie Changes Everything
For a long time, the story of Maggie Greene was shaped by pain. In The Walking Dead, she lost her husband Glenn after he was killed by Negan Smith. That moment stayed with her for years and pushed her into anger and grief that followed her through later seasons and into Dead City.
Now things are shifting in a big way. Actress Lauren Cohan explained that Maggie is finally starting to let go of the identity she built around loss.
She said, “This is really the first year when Maggie recognizes that to be defined by grief doesn’t serve her anymore. It started in Season 2 with her son – she knew that something had to change, which was very uncomfortable. There’s something bigger: a bigger purpose.” In simple terms, Maggie is trying to move forward, not just survive.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan also talked about how the relationship between Maggie and Negan has changed after years of conflict. He said, “We played as much hate as we could over the last 10 years. Now, we have known each other longer than anyone else alive. To survive, they need each other, and that was a big revelation. To see Maggie smile was so nice – haven’t seen it in 10 years!” He also added, “She didn’t even stab me one time!” showing the surprising shift in their dynamic.
This change does not mean they suddenly trust each other completely, but they are no longer only enemies. Instead, they are becoming allies in a harsh world. Their shared goal is survival, especially as they try to deal with life in post-apocalyptic Manhattan.

The story also continues to focus on Maggie’s son, Logan Kim’s character Hershel, who plays a key role in why Maggie is trying to change. Her past anger toward Negan has started to affect her relationship with her son, pushing her to rethink how she lives.
Season 3 of Dead City will also introduce new faces. Jimmi Simpson plays a strange survivor named Dillard, someone who has been living alone for years. Aimee Garcia joins as Renata, a new leader with charm and influence, while Raúl Castillo plays her brother Luis, a doctor. Returning characters like the Dama and the Croat, played by Lisa Emery and Željko Ivanek, are also part of the new season.
The new season will also try something unusual, including an episode set in an alternate version of New York where the apocalypse never happened. According to the new showrunner Seth Hoffman, there will not be one main villain this time. Instead, the story will focus more on survival, rebuilding, and the complicated choices Maggie and Negan make together.
The future of the spin-off is still not fully clear. It is unknown if season 3 will be the last or if The Walking Dead: Dead City will continue after it. Meanwhile, other parts of the franchise are also changing, with The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon moving toward its final season.
Season 3 of Dead City is set to premiere on July 26 on AMC and AMC+.
